Dads Working From Home tip of the day: Stocking the Home Office
Stocking your home office for the first time can be an exhilarating experience. In addition to the fun of combing the aisles at Office Max and Staples, you also have that "I'm really doing it!" sensation egging you on. And there's nothing like it, so don't cheat yourself out of this beautiful moment.
However, most of us don't have unlimited budgets, especially if we are counting on our home business to replace a recently lost corporate paycheck. Before staggering out of the office supply store, crumbling under the weight of file cabinets and a $2,000 Visa bill, Dads Working From Home founder, Richard C. Knowles, recommends you make note of the following basic office supplies:
• Calculator - it will never lie to you, so you may want to choose a durable model that can stand up to the occasional toss across the room.
• Computer - laptops work best, as there's nothing like robbing yourself of precious sleep while pounding away at a spreadsheet at 2:00am.
• Folders - a place for everything, and everything in its place. Establish your filing system before labeling any file. Trust me.
• Envelopes and stationery - if you can afford it, go with a brand name like Crane, and get professional letterhead made. Fake it ‘til you make it.
• Printer - I recommend a laser printer. You can get a decent one for under $200.00, and the print looks much crisper than an inkjet.
• Pens - even if you rarely use them, there's something inspiring about holding a quality writing implement.
• A velvet rope - or a lock, or a do-not-disturb sign... basically, anything that lets the rest of the family know that this is dad's work space.
Similar to not going grocery shopping when you're hungry, never tackle the office supply store without a list and a budget. Although that eighty dollar stapler would look pretty cool on your desk.
