How to Tell Internet Scams from the Real MLM Business

Internet scams such as pyramid schemes can be easily recognized for their get-rich-quick promises. The only people who make money are those at the top line and those in the down line earn crumbs from sign-up fees. There is no income from the sale of products or services since many pyramid schemes don't even offer a product or service, or if they create one, it is of little value.

Network marketing companies, on the other hand, offer a valuable product or service usually at a reasonable price. The online marketers don't have to rely another person's effort to earn money because they make their own sales. Although both methods of marketing involve the recruitment of a down line team, the earnings for Internet scams are based exclusively on how many people is recruited whereas in legitimate network marketing, the earnings derive from the sales made by the down line team. This means that a true network marketer can be successful on a sustaining basis with just one or a few strong sales agents in his down line. With Internet scams and pyramid schemes, the earnings dry up once recruits stop coming.

The latest scam to hit the Internet is the swine flu scam, which takes advantage of the pandemic on influenza A H1N1 virus that started in Mexico. Shortly after the worldwide alert was announced, about 150 websites were registered offering information and products on avoiding the flu. Some websites offer a safety mask, goggles and a Tyvek suit and gloves for $40, all of which are suspect in terms of effective protection against the virus.

So if you're thinking of pursuing the vast business opportunity that abounds in network marketing, study the field carefully for these scams before taking the plunge. Here are the easiest ways to recognize a scam:

It's too good to be true

The email that comes to you is usually unsolicited, offering to hire you at no cost, no skills or experience needed and promising lots of income to boot.

It asks for money upfront

Legitimate businesses don't charge anything for you to get started. They also don't send money for the benefit of work-at-home directories or start-up businesses, and they give away free information and job listings.

There are no references

You can't ask anyone to confirm the legitimacy of the offer, such a list of other employees or contractors to see how this has worked for them.

The fact is there are more work-from-home scams than legitimate online jobs or businesses so the best thing one can do is to adopt the legal dictum "guilty until proven otherwise." This means that you look for career or business opportunity by presuming that every listing is a scam until you find compelling evidence to prove this presumption wrong. Take some effort in researching the position, the company and the people that work in it. If everything is in order, then find a good network marketing company that can jumpstart your entry in the highly profitable world of MLM.

The legitimate network marketing companies will help you get started at no or very little cost. They will decide if you have the proper mindset, then coach you on the best practices of online marketing. There's plenty of room to grow and you can easily move ahead of the person who signed you up in terms of profits, bonuses and royalties.

The key to a successful online business is proper marketing. The best network marketing companies are keenly aware of this and have created duplicable marketing systems that teach you the click-by-click methods of how to market your product to a target audience. Then you don't have to hassle your friends and family who may not be interested.

Finally, the upright networking companies don't promise that you'll get rich overnight and are upfront about the fact that ambition and a strong work ethic will take you further in the business. Some even screen candidates for the right qualifications, which process helps in building a stronger company. Network marketing is not a get-rich-quick industry. Instead it can make you rich on a sustainable basis if you find the right company and you are imbued with the mindset that the financial possibilities in this industry are limited if you work for it.
