Is an Online Business a Real Business?

Is an Online Business a Real Business?

There is a general belief that people that start up an online business venture are not really starting up a business. On top of this many new online business owners believe that they can start up an online business and it will run by itself with little input from the business owner. It may be true that an online business takes less money to start originally but there is still considerable work that needs to be done in promotion and closing sales unless of course you have found the magic product that everyone just buys.

Most people starting out with an online business probably do not fully understand what they are getting involved with. They understand the internet, they understand the concept of having a web page to sell products from but they believe that all they have to do is put the web page out there and people will find it.

This trap sees a lot of people start their business with an initial outlay throw some money at some of the myriad of traffic exchanges, advertise on one or two site and maybe throw an advertisement in the local paper and sit back and wait. Most often nothing happens for these people from here on in.

Maybe it is easier to understand by comparing an online business startup with an offline business startup.

You begin a business from your basement or garage because you don't want to spend much money with startup costs. This would be similar to getting your own domain name or website in the online environment. Initially all you have is an online name with very little content or maybe you have bought a fully set up business venture.

Next, your online business needs a product or service to sell. People are not real likely to just stop by and give you money without getting something in return. An online business needs a product or service to sell. "Opportunity" itself is not a product.

Direct marketing in an offline business uses this multi tiered business opportunity model in some instances - they sell products as well as offering an opportunity for you to develop an income generating business. Amway and Herbalife are two such direct marketing business ventures. Most online business ventures are selling information or 'How to...' products.

Once you have decided on your product and you have set up your web site with a professional appearance then you will need to drive traffic to your site and advertise your site so that people know what you have to offer and how to find you. This is the same as an offline business. If you just opened a shop with all your products neatly arranged on shelves but didn't let anyone know you were there you may get some stragglers wandering through but you wouldn't get people who have jumped in their car at home to come and get something from your shop. In the online business world we call these targeted traffic.

As your offline business begins to grow, you'll find the need to bring on other resources to assist with the additional business. You may need extra staff, you may also outgrow your space or need space with better accessibility for more people. An online business will also require more resources as it grows. More often the needs of an online business are "digital" or "electronic" versus the "physical" needs of an offline business. However, most of these "electronic" products or services have associated costs and these need to be factored into your overall business plan.

The point of this comparison is simply that an online business does not simply succeed overnight. Sure, there are always exceptions, but most new businesses take time and effort to succeed. If anyone tells you differently, then be careful! Don't be too quick to pull out the credit card. A really important message is that those who fail to plan; often plan to fail. Don't you be one of these people that finds themselves reacting to unplanned interruptions. Plan your business and know where you want it to go otherwise you might end up somewhere else.

An online business can be very rewarding just as an offline business is for many people. Just be realistic as you approach it. Business planning is important as is effort, determination and perseverance.
