Why Trying Is Just Failing Without Taking Responsibility
"There is no try. Only do, or, do not" - Yoda
When pitching my business opportunity I often hear "XYZ company? I tried that before, no thanks!" And therein lays the problem, all this "trying" that people do, free trial offers are the bane of our society. They've created a "life is a smorgasbord" culture.
"I am trying to lose weight"
"Ok, I'll give that a try"
"Hey, it can't hurt to try"
Here is an equation for all the "testers" out there: No effort = No accomplishment
If there is nothing to be gained, if you do not have a hoped-for end result, then what exactly is the point of "trying"? Your approach to any situation in life and business should be: do...or do not. This (making the decision to do or not do) is the path to excellence, and that's where you are headed if you've stayed with me this far.
In my work I sometimes talk to people who are very passionate about the opportunity that's being presented and are quick to pull out their credit cards and sign up. These are the ones who go on and on about how much they've always wanted to do something like this, how long they've searched for this opportunity, how grateful they are that you found them or they found you. One just assumes that these are future superstars, the success stories that you will someday tell. But the truth is that these are the people who will give up first, way before the ones you had marked as quitters. They'll say things like:
- "I'm no longer interested" (meaning: this is harder than I thought)
- "I don't have enough time to do this" (translation: yes really, this is way too hard)
- "We can't afford this right now" (translation: I want to make money but I got theimpression that you were going to do it for me)
What they are really saying is "I thought someone would hold my hand, and do everything necessary to make me the success story that I envision myself being- with little or no effort on my part"
If you start a new job, business opportunity, or project and expect someone to hold your hand through the process, all I can say is grow up or go back to grade school. No one should be more invested in your success than you are; no one should bear the blame for your failure to succeed, except maybe... oh I don't know, you?
Since we are on the subject of failure, let's go ahead and address it. Do you choose "do not" because you are afraid to fail? How will you learn if you never fail? Do you think that life is a series of successes that you just keep building on? Are you the kind of person who would quit working your business and close the doors, because you lost some good people to a competitor? OR choose spinsterhood because relationships are just too hard?
If we never fail then what is the yardstick that we would use to measure success? Think about this, all of the top home run hitters in baseball, struck out two to three times more than they actually hit home runs. Failure will knock the wind out of your sails, but it will also breathe life and hope back into your dreams. Learn from your mistakes, implement strategies to avoid the mishaps of the past, but don't quit or give up; after all you are almost there now.
Success will be attracted to you when you begin to focus on being the best you that you can possibly be.
