Yes You Can Change Your World - But Change Begins With You

Article Overview: They say that in a corporate environment it can take years for someone to get promoted, quit, or die so that you can move up. However, one’s ability to move forward to the bigger office, bigger responsibility, or bigger paycheck is only limited by words and thoughts. Someone who understands the power of a positive mindset, moves freely up the ladder of success, while their water cooler mentality counterpart remains stuck in his puddle of negativity.

Yes You Can Change Your World - But Change Begins With You
"Man receives only that which he gives. The Game of life is a game of boomerangs. Man's thoughts, deeds or words return to him sooner or later with astounding accuracy." - Florence Scovel Shinn
So what does that little quote mean? Well it means that what you throw out into the world will come back to you eventually. Whether its return is to your benefit or detriment is totally up to you. On my journey through the corporate world, I worked for or with many different personality types; from control freaks, to people who were virtually invisible.
Had I known then the power of my words and deeds, I would have been a star. I would have risen through the ranks like a rocket. But I did not know any better and instead I fought the good fight and remained at the bottom of the dung heap where I so obviously belonged. You see I solidified my spot via negative affirmations (of course back then I didn't even know what an affirmation was, if only..).
They say that in a corporate environment it can take years for someone to get promoted, quit, or die so that you can move up. However, one's ability to move forward to the bigger office, bigger responsibility, or bigger paycheck is only limited by words and thoughts. Someone who understands the power of a positive mindset, moves freely up the ladder of success, while their water cooler mentality counterpart remains stuck in his puddle of negativity.
Take for example the manager who just seems to go out of her way to ruin your day, the one who has you crying in a bathroom stall in the middle of the day or piling up so much negativity in your system that you find yourself ill. You do your best to work with her, but she is just never satisfied with you and when it's time for your raise she writes such a bad review that all you get is a "better luck next year". What can you do to change this manager's attitude toward you?
I suggest that it's not her that needs changing it's you. Examine how you think about this person; listen closely to what you say to her and watch how she reacts to you. It could be that she gets a kick out of making you squirm. Or maybe she takes pride in her work and does not think that you take pride in yours. Whatever the case may be, you need to change how you interact with this person but, most importantly, you must change how you think about, speak about, and react to her.
For example, do you expect her to be unhappy with you or your work? Are your mind and heart filled with dread when she schedules a meeting with you? Remember that not only do we get exactly what we expect, but the things we focus on tend to expand. So if you expect every interaction to be a bad one it will be, and if you spend all of your time focusing on what a bad situation you are in, it will grow even worse.
Change the way that you think and speak about your manager, change "My manager is always unhappy with my work" to "My manager is always happy with my work". Change your expectations about this relationship, take "Oh God she wants to meet with me, this is going to suck" and change it to "Oh good, she wants to meet with me, we can discuss XYZ and I will be able to show her where I am with that project".
Your manager will enjoy the new you and you may be surprised to discover that your co-workers will also find you a pleasure to work with.
When a situation has become unbearable, don't change jobs, don't change location - change your thoughts, change your words, change your expectations.
