Star Wars Taught Me The Most Important Internet Marketing Lesson

Do you understand light years? I don't have a full grasp on it myself, but it came up in conversation last night and thought it made for a compelling analogy. So, as I butcher any science involved, I'm going to put things into perspective.

A light year is equal to just under 10 trillion km, or about 5,878,630,000,000 miles. A light year is used to measure distances to stars and other Battle Star Galactica terms I'm unfamiliar with.

I do know, however, that there are stars that are multiple light years away that are not currently there anymore. What I mean is that they are so far away we continue to see something that no longer exists. I know, this is a little Star Trekky but stick with me.

So, if there are images that are still visible but no longer exist, how big is all that is out there? The only reason I ask is to simply put into perspective how infinitesimally small and rather unimportant our tasks are. I know some of you just got your feeling hurt by that statement but it's true.

We're talking about this, that and the other in terms of living our lives and how to correctly communicate on Twitter. Give me a Break!

Most of the people I teach over analyze everything. They don't do this, or feel uncomfortable about that, etc. These are all FEAR based emotions that give you feedback in terms of being uneasy. When you begin to realize that you are on this ONE PLANET for a VERY short period of time, dealing with a very minute detail, you will begin to release some of that fear.

Let's face it, what we do, as marketers and business owners, is extremely easy. We have been conditioned to believe what we do is more important than it truly is. Will the Universe come to a screeching halt if you type the wrong keywords, say something out of line on Facebook or get Slapped by Google? No, but most of us spend days, if not months, researching and analyzing something before we do it like we're sending a man to Mars.

Make the most of your time. Be bold and go after what you know is yours. You will be rewarded for your efforts and you will learn and be a better business owner from your mistakes. We're talking about mastering the internet for marketing and advertising purposes, not mastering the Universe. I hope this helps you on your Journey. Until next time, Happy Marketing!

Wikis vs websites Wikis vs websites - Hi, AM Yes, you've pretty much got it. There's plenty of Wikis out there - for example Star Trek has a wiki, Star Wars has a wiki called Wookiepedia, there's even a Terry Pratchett wikipedia called LSpace. There's even a sports wikipedia called Armchair GM... Ah, my brilliant ideas are always a day late and a dollar short... However, the more I research them...the more I see that they don't have any ads on these sites...so basically they're just big ol' philanthropies... not what I'm aiming at, at all!
Re: Kevin's Case Study #11 - A New Forum Category? Re: Kevin's Case Study #11 - A New Forum Category? - Hi Kevin, Like GT suggested, I also think you can add Internet Marketing as a sub category in the Marketing section and also a Social marketing as subcategory. Online marketing/internet marketing/online promotion are the same, and it will be best to use the common term - Internet marketing. I can't think about someone to moderate a Social Marketing category. We all use it, we all know how to make it work and we all have our own different experience with it.
Re: Cash up front ... or Royalties? Re: Cash up front ... or Royalties? - There are so many amazing stories here. Most my inventions were created on the job and are the property of my employer. Cash up front if you are out of options is what some people must do. These people may consider a 5 year contract. This would allow them to renegotiate another license when they are stronger financially. Truth is most people that are in financial trouble today are still in trouble 5 years later. Discipline and control of your own life is priceless. An example of cash up front versus royalties is "Star Wars" Harrison Ford (Hans Solo) took cash up front. He needed the money. Alec Ginness (Obiwankonbi) took royalties. I believe the force is still paying.
Re: What would you like to see be invented? Re: What would you like to see be invented? - Hi GT, All I know is that Paul Walker is one of the main characters in Timeline. On the Star Trek side, there's one invention we already have that's very similar, just not as good. All of the doors on the Enterprise automatically open when someone gets to them, and then automatically close after they've passed through. We have that technology in every supermarket store. What I would like to see as an improvement is that all of those doors open much faster, like they did on Star Trek. Sometimes I have to wait for the doors to open because they don't start to open until I'm almost running into them, and then they open rather slow. If they could improve on them and have them more like the doors in Star Trek that would be awesome.
facebook facebook - On Facebook, Is it possible to ignore game notifications from friends on my wall? I love Facebook, but I use it only for close friends and family. While I'm happy to see what all my relatives are doing during the day, some of my friends and family play games, like Mafia Wars, Farmville, or Vampire Wars. Every time they do something in the game, it gets posted to my wall and clogs it with ugly graphics and pointless notifications. Is there a way to tell FB that I don't care about my friends' games?
