The most important words you'll ever write

Written by: Mathew Tamin

Article Overview: Do you want to know the secret to selling things successfully online? It's finding the RIGHT WORDS for the job. Most visitors take 8 seconds or less to decide whether to stick around or move on to the next site. Just 8 seconds -- that's all the time you have to convince them YOUR site is where they want to be. It doesn't matter how well designed your site is... ... How high your search engine ranking is... ... Or how amazing your product is. If you don't GRAB your visitors' attention right away, they're going to leave and probably never return. Of all the words on your site, the most important are the ones in your HEADLINE. Your headline is the first thing your visitors see. It needs to capture their attention -- spark their curiosity-- and compel them to read further. And it has to do it fast.

The most important words you'll ever write

To guarantee YOUR headlines jump off the page and pull potential buyers deeper into your site, always follow TWH''s Top 3 "Unbreakable" Headline Rules: Rule #1: RELATE A PROBLEM

Most visitors, when they come to your site, are looking for information -- probably in relation to a problem they want to solve.

Maybe they're curious about local flight schools in their area. Maybe they're searching for molded chrome fenders to put on a 1953 Chevy Bel-Air. Or maybe they're trying to figure out how to "unshrink" wool clothes that accidentally ended up in the dryer.

Whatever their problem is, relate to it. Show them YOU know what it's all about. Demonstrate a clear and genuine understanding of their wants and needs -- and they'll be far more willing to buy from you.

Rule #2: PRESENT A SOLUTION

You've described a problem. Now you've got to solve it -- in a way that creates a powerful image in the mind of your visitors.

Tell your visitors they're about to discover how to get the most qualified flight instructors at the lowest price in town. Describe how their new chrome fenders will help them outshine the competition at the next state-wide car show. Promise them their wife or girlfriend will NEVER know her favorite sweater once shrank small enough to fit a chihuahua.

Get them to envision the end result -- and you're more than halfway to making the sale.

(NOTE: "How to..." and "Discover..." headlines are good at getting people to imagine the end result.)

Rule #3: FOCUS ON BENEFITS -- NOT FEATURES

People aren't so interested in what your product or service is. They want to know what it does.

Specifically, they want to know what it'll do for THEM.

Tell them they'll get the real "inside scoop" on the flight school scene -- because they'll be learning it from someone who's been a pilot in the area for more than 30 years. (Provided that's true, of course.)

Have them imagine the honks, smiles, and admiring glances their car will get every time they drive it down the road. Describe the relief they'll feel when they know they're back in their wife or girlfriend's good books.

Remember the most important question that's on all of your visitors minds -- "What's in it for ME?" -- and make sure you answer it.

Proven headlines you can outright steal

To get you started, here are five proven salescopy headline templates you can try on your site. These templates are among the most successful ever written -- and chances are they'll yield great results for you, too.

1. Warning: [Blank] -- For example:

Warning: 89% of All Online Businesses Fail in the First Year -- Will Yours Be One of Them?

2. Do You Make These Mistakes? -- For example:

3. How [blank] Made Me [blank] -- For Example:

4. [Blank] Ways to [blank] -- For example:

5. If You're [blank], You Can [blank] -- For example:

If You're a Stay-at-Home Mom with a Computer, You Can Make an Extra $250 a Day

Remember, your headline can have a massive impact on your sales, so you'll want to spend lots of time on it.

We spend HOURS writing our headlines, and we often test four or five of them before we settle on one that works. But that time is always well spent.

In fact, we once made one tiny tweak to one of our headlines...

... And overnight our revenues jumped by 714%!

Once you've written a few different headlines, TEST THEM. Run them for a couple of weeks, then compare the results against other headlines. Then, tweak them and test them again!

You may have to do this a few times before you hit on one that consistently yields great results -- but it's definitely worth the effort.

(Editor's note: the article below this one talks about "power" words that have been proven to capture people's attention, so make sure you keep reading! You'll want to make sure you're using these words in your headlines.)

Of course, before you start working on your headline, first you have to know what you're going to sell...

Mathew E. Tamin is a 24 year old power house for the Kingdom of God. At the age of 7 Mathew accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. In less than one week after accepting Christ into his life, the Lord Jesus appeared to Mathew in a dream and said, You shall establish my Kingdom and my Son Jesus will help you.Subsequent dreams of Christïcs appearances, angelic visitations, and visitation to Hell followed. While in high school, Mathew had a trance. In that trance, the Lord Jesus Christ showed him hell and what happens to those who do not accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. After that experience, Mathew's life was never the same. Mathew graduated from college (Kean University) at the age of 20 with a B.A. in Psychology and an A.A. in Music. He was the president of the Kean University Gospel choir and very active in student government. He also had helped leadership positions in Campus Crusade for Christ, Intervarsity Christian Fellowship and Fresh Oil Ministries in college.

In 2005, Mathew founded Divine Destiny Ministries, a group of people who are on fire to save the lost souls from going to hell through his books and other ministry resources. Divine Destiny Ministries would later relocate to Rapid City, South Dakota. The primary ministry and motto of Divine Destiny Ministries is, Taking the Gospel to the Nations Matt 19:28. Most importantly, he has a passion to see the lives of people transformed by the power of God. Today, Divine Destiny Ministries is reaching over 100 countries in 45+ languages.

Re: When is your interest peaked by unsolicited mail? - [quote="Kevin":1334md1s]However, I feel as if all of Bly's keywords are over-used and audiences have learned to ignore them in unsolicited email headlines.[/quote:1334md1s] Kevin, you are right. Internet marketers squeezed all the juice from these words. "Find the secret to..." When I see this one I know that I will see a sales page. Most of the words on the list are considered as spam. You can't write a normal email without thinking on your words and wonder if this email ever arrive to the inbox.
Re: What is your biggest challenge? Today? Re: What is your biggest challenge? Today? - [quote="Kevin":3iyh4v03][quote="Alan Mater":3iyh4v03]The question of quality comes into play at this point. If you can find a writer that's willing to write an article for you for say $1, what kind of quality do you think you will get? I personally wouldn't expect much, but then again you never know.[/quote:3iyh4v03] Hi Alan, I know someone who recently hired a freelance writer to produce articles (500 words/article) at a price of $10 each, but the content wasn't usable. It was as if the writer simply Googled the subject and then tried to re-word existing content. The grammar in the articles was poor, while the content lacked flow and cohesion. But then again, $10 for 500 words is crap pay, so you get what you pay for.[/quote:3iyh4v03] Hi Kevin, Some people think $10 is a lot, while others are willing to pay it, or even more. But I agree, I'd charge more simply because it does take time to write, and it takes even more time if I'm not familiar with the topic and have to research it. You do get what you pay for, most of the time. I think it's also important to do some research on the freelancers you're considering in hiring. One of my proofreading clients, when she first contacted me about working for her, said that she had did her research on me and found that I would be a good partner. I was impressed because she took the time to figure out who I was and what I do. She viewed my bio in various websites and social sites. You almost have to do that nowadays if you want quality work. It takes time, but it will save you money and time in the long run.
Re: Link Building Tactics Series Part 2 Re: Link Building Tactics Series Part 2 - [quote="Alan Mater":15j65zur]Great article as always, Evan. Just one question... You say that it's harder to get your posts indexed if they're shorter than 300 words. And that you should strive for 500. My most recent post is less than 300 words, and it was indexed by Google hours later. I imagine this might not be the case if your blog is somewhat new, but for blogs with some authority, I don't think it's a bad thing if you mix a few shorter posts in with your longer ones. Would you agree?[/quote:15j65zur] I agree. Although I rarely (if ever) write posts less than 300 words, I don't see the harm in doing it every once in a while. Especially if you do have a well established blog already.
Being Productive Being Productive - I compose and write everything on my PC... but I've never gotten used to doing To Do lists or record keeping (except account-type record keeping) on the PC. I do that kind of thing in a notebook so I can actually have the written words in front of me at all times. I've got a huge white-board calendar on my wall on which I write the things I need to accomplish each day, and each time I look up from my computer I see it. Having a place for everything and everything in its place is a key ingredient to staying productive - so you don't have to look for things you need and destroy the creative mood.
