You don't know what it meant until you have had a high expectation on the outcome of, say, a project, a result or even a journey. You experienced a feeling of joy; you are elated and have even started dreaming of how to spend a hard won holiday. You dreamt of a scented embrace from your love, you saw your kids running to meet and embrace you.
You actually took your time planning it all. You even rehearsed your response. You felt you have done everything and put almost all into it, money, time, energy - everything. You were even happy your plan is getting into focus. Things seemed easy. All around you were music, flowers, songs, and happy people. The world was happy. Your universe was joyful; you could not even get to sleep. You were soaring high, higher...your dreams were full of heaven on earth.
You could embrace everybody even a mad man. You readily forgave your worst enemies they suddenly looked like well-wishers, barking dogs looked like saints. You own the world, best cars, houses, kids everything. You ruled the world. Presidents served your dinner everybody was your subject, you their master. And ... suddenly it all came crashing down. You raised up your head from debris, you looked around you see nothing but your shame, jolted out of your egoistical reveries, rudely brought back to reality, the world of living.
The shit hit you hard, full in the face, on the neck; you are fully enmeshed in your own shit.Months, weeks, and days of planning all gone down the drain. Wow! Nothing to hope for again. Suicide? Never the best option, only the worst of cowards would go for that. Running from it all? To where? Everything suddenly became big and intimidating you feel like a helpless ant. Reality hit you, you are a small, insignificant, and the world is larger than life. You who once felt on top of the world now feel under it. You have been disappointed.
But listen to this: "those who fear failure limit their opportunity because failure is only an opportunity to begin more intelligently again". The world reknown statesman and the illustrious son of America, Abraham Lincoln, got it wrong several times before he would eventually rose up from series of disappointments to leave an indelible footprints on the sand of times as one of the greatest leaders that ever lived. Ted Turner of CNN is another living example of our time. The iconic CNN is a resultant product of series of trial and errors, disapointments and bankrupt. But he eventually got it right due to persitence,endurance and clarity of purpose. Remember, winner never quits while quiter never wins.

- Yes, it does complicate things when you get promoted and then manage your previous peers.
Rising through the ranks can really "urk" the people who aren't rising with you, especially if they have more of a negative view. You can then be the subject of their frustration. The important thing is to realize this is about them and not about you. Otherwise, it can be really difficult as a leader.
