How to Manage Your Home Business around Vacation
Vacations are a dream come true for kids but they can be a nightmare for the parents who have a home business. There is a lot to be said about the peace and quiet one gets used to while the kids are in school. Then again everyday is not a Sunday, right?
There are pros and cons to having a home-based business. The biggest advantage is that you are there on call and at hand to attend to any and every problem. The biggest disadvantage is that you have to fit in work with everything else like grocery shopping, answering the door, attending to the phone, the tradesman, or the postman, performing daily chores like cooking, cleaning, washing, and tidying, and attending to sick kids. And, to add to all this you have school vacations and Christmas too.
Your small business requires your undivided attention at all times, so you need to keep vacation dates in mind when organizing your schedule. School vacations are a given, so one can plan around the dates well in advance as you can do with Christmas.
Prioritize, Plan and Proceed
There are lots of ways in which one can keep children occupied during vacations other than Christmas.
- The first thing you must do BEFORE the holidays commence is to complete all your extra and pending work and keep minimum for the duration of the vacation. This way you are not under any work-related pressure, yet you don't lose out on potential business opportunities.
- Look for hobby classes that are close to your house so that there are no pick up and drop issues. They will keep your kids occupied for a few hours a day.
- Get together with other parents who face a similar problem. You can put a system in place where one family can take care of the kids leaving the others free. This way if you are, say four families, you do kid duty once in four days with Sundays off for everyone. You can make up for the work day lost on the other 3 days.
- Sit your kids down and explain to them why you need peace and quiet to finish your work. Get a routine in place so they know what they have to do and allot TV time accordingly. Give them jobs around the house that will take a load off you.
Unless your small business directly benefits from the holiday season, there is no reason why your home business cannot take a well-earned break and what better time than Christmas. It's the best time to relax and enjoy all the merrymaking with your family and children before you settle down to business again come the New Year.
To manage your home business around vacations all you need is:
- Some forward planning,
- A little organizing,
- A little hard work,
- Lots of patience,
- A routine in place so the kids don't feel neglected and left out,
- And, a "meals together" policy, so you eat and ensure that the kids eat well too.
