How to Manage Your Home Business
Owning and operating a home business requires determination, discipline and dedication. You must be self-motivated. If you are a person that needs someone to tell you what to do each day and watch over your shoulder a home based business may not be for you, unless you don't mind being nagged by your spouse or significant other.
To work from home successful there are a few things that you need:
1. Work area that is quiet and away from all the household distractions. You need to be able to concentrate on your work without interruptions. Your family must understand that you are at work and they need to leave you alone. I stock my office with enough water bottles to last the day so I do not have to get up and leave my area to go into the family space.
2. You need proper equipment. You need a desk large enough to handle the work that you are doing. You need a speaker phone, preferably with conferencing capability, high speed internet and a fax/photocopier/scanner. Get good efficient equipment. You don't want to be slowed down by inadequate equipment.
Dress for success. Get up each morning and get ready for work. Have a shower, do your hair and put on your shirt and pants, you don't need a business suit, but don't work in your pajamas. Get up, have breakfast with your family and then get to work.
You need to commit to working a certain amount of hours each day. You can split up your working day into sections. Work a couple of hours in the morning. Have lunch and run an errand, then work a couple of works in the afternoon, take a break and then work a couple of hours in the evening if you like but put in your time. Your success is dependant on the time that you put into your business. If you don't spend the time you are only cheating yourself.
I have worked a home business for over 20 years. At one point the business grew too much to work from home so I got a small office. I am now backing to working at home with one personal assistant. I enjoy the flexibility that a home based business offers. I have my business set up so I can work from anywhere in the world, as long as I have access to internet. The rewards are great for working at home.
