How to address Consumer Fear
Recession has been the bloodcurdling cry for over a year now. The economic downturn that followed froze many business owners in their boots, vaporized several large and ancient business houses, and rocked the very base of the world economic system. The consumer was caught in the middle of this maelstrom, with no apparent source of refuge as their steady pay checks either disappeared or became increasingly unsteady.
Within months countless were homeless, jobless, or unsure of where their next meal would come from. Under such hostile conditions, invariably consumer confidence shriveled and was immediately replaced by consumer fear - the fear for livelihood.
The industry is poised on the consumer's readiness to buy its goods and services; however, fearful consumers are seldom ready to spend on goods and services unless they are indispensable. The resulting economic paralysis has by now been analyzed and cross-analyzed - all hoping to pounce on the first glimmer of dawn of the next economic boom; which we hope is just around the corner.
In this tense scenario, we find that the survivors are mostly small businesses and home-based businesses. These businesses have and are coming out stronger than before. These businesses have learned to tackle consumer fear with insight and sensitivity. By readjusting their business plan, cutting frivolous expenses (down sizing), they retained customers who already being familiar with them where encouraged to stay loyal by four wise and prudent offerings.
These are detailed below.
- Value for money: It is of primary importance that your product or service be of high quality and exceeds consumer expectation. They want every penny they spend to count for them. Make every effort to retain a consumer as during times of recession no new consumer will not enter the market. It is better to track down old customers or make every effort to retain existing ones.
- Competitive pricing: Prudent cost cutting paves the way for competitive pricing. High quality at a low price is a recession buster. Strange kinds of businesses have thrived during this past year. They are thrift shops, appliance repair shops, car mechanic services, and pawn shops. All of them operate on low overhead but offer a great way for the consumer to cut costs.
- Add popular new products or services to your existing line: This will gain you a new market segment even if your existing market shrinks. This will also pave the way for you to plan and position yourself for the next boom.
- Superior service: Customer service can make or break your business reputation. Superior service will exceed the customer's expectation from the time they contact you to enquire about your product or service till you deliver. This will also ensure that they recommend you to others.
Another addition to your customer base is customers who were left high and dry by other businesses that shut down during this time. They need somebody to go to and your business can be ready to receive them with ease. Another source of strength to your business is your foray into new business segments.
