Tips for Working from Home with a Toddler

Working from home is a very big advantage that the world of the internet has created. This is more so for stay-at-home moms who need to work but are unable to step out of the house due to family circumstances. But working from home comes with its own pros and cons, do’s and don’ts, advantages and disadvantages etc. There are many facets to running a home and work tacks itself to that never-ending list. It calls for re-organizing and proper time management and this is more true when you have children or a toddler running around underfoot 24/7. To work from home with a toddler calls for some pretty good reflexes and dexterity in all your work and an in-built ability to think ahead, especially from your toddlers point of view who is no more than 8-12 inches off the ground. Some useful tips The most important aspect of child rearing is routine. Yes, boring as it may sound, babies thrive on routine. Get their bath, eat, sleep, park and play routine set and you are set to be a mum who does have time to breathe. Keep the quietest time of the day for actual work to be done like writing, drafting etc. If your toddler needs to see and hear you around but is happy doing his/her own thing in a playpen then this time can be well used for checking mails etc, which can be done with 80% concentration while the balance 20% is ensuring baby is safe. Keep your stock of crayons, toys etc ready. You can attempt fitting in cooking and housework while the child is awake, keep them around you, talking to them, make them feel involved by giving them something to do, some pots and pans to play with can do the trick. Sometimes, the TV can play babysitter for short durations. Babies are very clever and they know when they are being ignored. You don’t need whiny and cranky toddlers now, do you? If they feel they have your attention then they will not whine. Did you know that most kids end up doing naughty mischievous things because it is attention getting? Give them the required attention and you will generally not have any trouble. Rope in other members of the household to help with chores and outdoor jobs so the pressure on you reduces. A home calls for team work. It is not a one-woman/man show and everyone should remember that. Finally, put your foot down and tell everyone to pull their socks up and get cracking if they want to enjoy the added benefits your extra income will bring in. It is easy to work from home if you put your mind to it and decide that this is what you have to do. Some things will definitely take a backseat but in the long run it’s not so bad. Your toddler needs you but they also need the things your extra money will bring in.

Working for yourself means you are investing in your own future, not someone else's, although there is value in working for someone else first to gain experience and confidence. Working for yourself does not automatically mean success, fame and fortune. For most entrepreneurs, it takes much work and dedication to get to the point of financial success and comfort - sometimes years. But the benefit is, again, you know you are investing in yourself and building equity for your own future. GT :-]
Re: Trade Shows - Are They Worth It? Re: Trade Shows - Are They Worth It? - HI, I have used trade shows (not participated) to collect potential clients. For example, the Home & Garden Industry is extremely behind the time in regards to their websites. I attended an Home & Garden Expo in Denver and collected all the companies contact information. I plan on cold calling & mailing information to each business. It also gave me time to research the industry more, talk directly to the owners in many cases, and learn more about what they need. Jeff
