MY VALUES

When this values discussion comes up, I used to sort of zone out. I had no idea what these people who were up there meant. So I totally ignored any possible values that I have. But the interesting thing is that this topic kept recurring in my life. Every now and then, in college, at college career services, in college again, in decision making classes, and in numerous books on personal growth and development that I have read over the years. Surprisingly enough though, I just kept ignoring or sort of ignoring the question.

I am not sure how many of you have done the same thing. Not maliciously, or self deprecatingly, just really too busy to bother. After all, in the rat race, what does it really matter what your values are if they are going to be eradicated by your boss, your family, your associates because they really don’t care about you or what you think. If you have to always toe the line in an organization because you are not the boss, do you values really matter? So why bother having or exploring your own values anyway? Right?

Well not exactly! Many of us are most assuredly working in jobs that we do not totally choose joyously. Perhaps they suited us at one time but now no longer do. Perhaps we have outgrown them, but financially we have not been able to leave them. The same could be said about growth and development in marriages. But lets stick to our finances shall we?

FORWARD FAST to DISCOVERY

So instead of hiding our heads like the ostrich burying his head in the sand, lets take a good long look at who we are. When I discover that I like the Earth and Space (environment, astronomy) skiing, languages, travel to the mountains then I see that there is where I feel most at home. When I realize that I could sit and write for hours and do on a daily basis, I know that I value the peace, serenity and quiet of the writers’ studio. When I get excited about my stocks going up and being able to find a great dividend payer stock, I know that I like finances for the sake of making money.

So my values of connection to life, peace, serenity, security, success, self actualization and beauty can stand determined. These values of course may change and probably will as I change or grow. But for now they are something to work with. A basis to start out from in determining what my best possibilities are for having happiness and success in investing and careers during my best years.

Over 30 years of manufacturing ladies apparel has taught me two critical business lessons: 1-You will never get a 100% perfect outcome so In the BEGINNING,take your time, exhaust all your resources and energy and plan, plan, plan. . . If it STARTS off right it you'll get close to the desired outcome. 2-Keep it simple I now will add "Clarity" to my formula for success. CLARITY AND KEEPING IT SIMPLE BREEDS SUCCESS . . . . I know the advice above is simple but isn't that what it's all about.
