Role Models that Work For You

Guest post by: Pia Lord

Article Overview: The Quantum Leap Myth is important to understand when you are choosing your role models. Not every dream should be based upon the greatest superstar that you can think. It is far better to choose someone that you can truly relate to and whose level you can work slowly towards, learn from and really grow with.

Role Models that Work For You

Now I think most kid would think it ’cool” to have a Mom like Sigourney Weaver or Meryl Streep. They would love to be able to say that their mom is a famous movie actress. Who would not? The lights , the cameras, the attention, the glamorous clothing, the rich lifestyles with Maserati cars and homes on islands in the Caribbean, the South Pacific or the Indian Ocean. Such exotic or remote places that most of us will never even see or get to go to in our lifetime. We think.

When I was in college in the 80’s, the idea of being a

“super woman” or “super something’ was floating all around. It was impossible to miss. Gloria Steinem was touting women’s liberation till there was no tomorrow, students were crying free South Africa from Apartheid-divest now!, Merrill Lynch was flying high with offices around the world, Susanne Vega was big as was Joan Baez (in my mind) and a bunch of jazz greats like Miles Davis were on the scene blowing people away with what they could do.

I remember thinking, what can I do? I couldn’t do anything it seemed. I was so lost! Even though I was at an Ivy League College in NYC, where the brightest and best go! So what was that all about. I just started painting then and getting into my music again.

So now years later, I realize that to have dreams and ambitions you must follow through to make them happen. But they have to be your own dreams, things that you are passionate about. I remember saying that I wanted to be an ambassador. I think that is why they let me in to that school. But once there I had no idea what to do. I did not even ask for help! I did just as my dad would say “floundered”.

But hey! Living in a suburban part of America for most of my growing up years, I had been very sheltered from the real world. The real world to me had been lacrosse practice and practicing piano. So I had to seek my own passions later when I was in NYC. Since I totally abandoned those former things that I did, being transplanted to a new world, so to speak. So in Rome do as the Romans do!

So the ordinary life that I now live is so far from the life that I thought I would be living as an ambassador going to parties, working for my country, negotiating deals, participating in peace talks, climate talks, environmental management sessions to keep our planet healthy and sound.

But ordinary, I am finding, is not really so ordinary! Every day has its exciting things to do. Each day, each of the 24 hours can be spent in anyway I choose. I now see that there is nothing ordinary about life at all. With each moment I can create the life that I want. I can live in each moment and be happy. Heck I could still become that ambassador in some way. But its got to be my dream! It really getting involved with whatever you love to do and working diligently at it.

Life, the Earth, ourselves. It really just takes leaving it all alone so that it can heal and be itself. It does not need our intervention, unless we have already destroyed some aspect of it. Just like the miracle of the human body, it we leave well enough alone, it usually regenerates .

When I sit on the couch with my son, who is three and watch a show with him. I ask him, “Do you want me to go and get you something to eat?” He says, “No Mom, just stay here with me“. I know that I am in the right place.

if you are picking your role model or working with someone to help them choose a role model, be realistic to start with and true to yourself. You probably will have more than one role model that you can emulate at one time or another as your dreams work their way to reality.
