Let’s be clear about one fact: Maintaining a profitable home based business is a huge challenge.  It really sounds great to be working from the comforts of your home, however don’t overlook the necessary self-discipline needed to operate an income generating Internet home based business.

This type of business on the Internet, though practical and appealing, also presents obstacles to achieving success when working from home. If you want to achieve success while working from home you'll need to exercise self discipline and set parameters; most critical, a clear distinction between work and leisure time activities must be established.

In order for your home based business to become successful, here are some tips to help you achieve that goal:

First, when working from home you must immediately establish the time and attention you'll need to devote to your business and then follow that schedule as you did when you worked a regular job.  Remember, this is a real business and you are the boss and the buck stops with you. You are only cheating yourself if you don’t follow the scheduled work hours.

There will be distractions when working your business from home. You have to avoid distractions and activities that waste time, such as:

  • Friends visiting unannounced.
  • Personal phone calls. A separate phone for your business would help.
  • Neighbors calling or dropping by without first calling
  • Personal errands 
  • Family disturbances unless they're emergencies; matter of life and death

Next, you'll need to set up an office in an extra room of your home to be completely dedicated to your work. This will help your mind on work and minimize disturbances.  A separate work space or office will also help you stay better organized.

When working, avoid watching your favorite TV program, or listening to music for relaxation. Just as important to avoid is surfing the Internet for whatever, during your working hours. None of those entertainment electronic toys should be in your office.

Again, as I mentioned before about surfing; only do this during work hours and it should be limited to work related issues. In fact it is recommended that you establish a separate work related email address and develop the habit of checking your email just twice a day to better manage your time.

Now, it should be clear to you that managing an Internet home based business requires discipline and motivation.
