Internet Home Based Business and the Importance of Computer Literacy

There are an ever increasing number of people who own computers and don’t know really how to use them. That includes individuals who have accepted the challenge of starting an Internet home based business opportunity and never thought of what knowledge was needed.

This article is for everyone, especially those who are relatively new to the world of information technology and the Internet.

First, everyone involved with home business on the Internet needs at least basic computer and Internet skills with the obligation and commitment to continue learning now and into the future. Why? Clearly because the Internet and information technology are evolving very fast and if you do not keep pace and stay updated, your chances of success on the Internet are extremely limited.

You would be amazed at the number of people who fall into the category of not being computer literate, yet attempt to start a business without a working knowledge of computers and the Internet. Listen up folks! The Internet and information technology is not going away; it is a part of life and the society we live in. Whether in business or working a traditional job, this knowledge is necessary or you will be I referred to as a “functional illiterate” in the midst of high technology.

Computer literacy is:

Basically, computer literacy is operating a personal computer comfortably and without fear. Computer literacy is also defined as the ability to use computers and technology efficiently. The highest goal of a computer-literate person is to be able to learn and use new computer programs without a lot of help. It can also refer to the comfort level one has with using computer programs and other applications related to computers.

Moreover, it is the ability to use several very specific programs such as Microsoft Word, Internet Explorer, My Documents, and My Computer as well as some system related programs. Without a working knowledge of these few basic and standard programs, starting an Internet home based business will be difficult and very frustrating. Also, it may contribute to an individual failing with their business and simply giving up.

To become computer literate what can you do?

Other than courses at a community college or some expensive computer training institute, you can self-teach yourself easily. There are FREE tutorials on just about any subject that are available on the Internet. This will require initiative, discipline, self-motivation and determination. It is absolutely necessary to have these skills in order to start, build and maintain your Internet home based business in an efficient way.

For those individuals who have this innate fear of computers and believe you have to almost be a scientist in order to understand and use them, think about children ages 5 and 6 years of age who have no problem with computers. You may even learn something from your teen aged children who use them regularly. Conceive it, believe it, take action and do it.

Re: Who inspired you to start? Re: Who inspired you to start? - Hi Evan, I was inspired by Mr. Bill Gates ever since I was a student learning Computers. But I was motivated for Internet as my Business, when I read his book "The Road Ahead" in 1995. It was in this book that Gates laid out his vision of an interconnected world built around the Internet. Based on the premise that life will be transformed by the convergence of inexpensive computing and inexpensive communications, Gates drew from his experience at the center of the personal computer revolution to give insights on the growth, evolution and impact of technology. I had always looked up to Bill Gates as my idol. When I read this book, it made me more focussed on Microsoft and Internet, The Internet was one of the upcoming things in this time. So I took over to the Internet as my primary business. Regards,
secure my connection secure my connection - I agree with Link's second post. Security is a personal sticky issue and possibly not the first service you should introduce yourself at the door. I'd suggest also the Back to School "In-Home" Computer tuneup (it's such a pain to take your computer in for servicing) and promise that they would see a smoother and faster computer. You can hand them a 2 page report on the benefits of having a computer tuneup -> this is critical. After you are gone this is the only piece of information that they will have to begin trusting you and want to have you in their home. You can sneak at the bottom of the report the benefits of having a wireless connection and the importance of Securing it. finish off the report with two dotted rounded rectangle boxes beside each other. One has a free Computer tune up assessment and the other a free wireless network security test. If they take you up on either you can test for the other. You now have two sources of possible income.
