Separate room for conducting business from your home:

Seriously consider not combining your office with the living spaces in the home; living room, parlor, kitchen, game room, etc. You will need to ensure that your place of business operations is away from the living areas of your home because it may affect the smooth functioning of your business.

Being disturbed while you are working or discussing business with your clients is one of the worse things that can happen in your business. Your family must understand that you cannot be disturbed when in your office, except for an emergency.

It is very important for you to explain to your family about how much your work from home business means to you. With the support of your family you will be able to take your business to a higher level of success.

Your office environment should be conducive to work:

The room you choose for your business should be conducive to work. It has to be clean, quiet, have proper lighting and well organized.

If for any reason your clients have to visit your office, it should be professional and organized. They should not feel uncomfortable when visiting your place of business.

If you are unable to afford the air conditioning system, you will need to make sure that your home office is provided with sufficient ventilation. You will also need to ensure that the lighting system is satisfactory for working long hours in your home business office.

Keep it clean and tidy:

It is important to assign the proper places for computer equipment and other items in your office. Organizing your workplace will really help you to work efficiently. You cannot afford wasting your precious productive time looking for things when you need them.

You should be in a position to know exactly where things are. A separate filing cabinet will also help you to organize the physical files.

Re: Trade Shows - Are They Worth It? - HI, I have used trade shows (not participated) to collect potential clients. For example, the Home & Garden Industry is extremely behind the time in regards to their websites. I attended an Home & Garden Expo in Denver and collected all the companies contact information. I plan on cold calling & mailing information to each business. It also gave me time to research the industry more, talk directly to the owners in many cases, and learn more about what they need. Jeff

Try wikipedia.com for more information - That depends what type of business you are involved in. Maybe if you share that, we can help you a little better. I work mostly in the Work at Home industry so my advice would only be along those lines.
Franchises in Texas... - I wonder if any Home Depots are going to open in Houston and environs to take care of rebuilding the city and suburbs? At the very least, it will probably be a boon for construction and home repair workers.... and scammers too, of course.
