Starting a Home Based Business-Some Important Things Freelancers Must Know
Starting a home based business
as a freelancer might appear to be an attractive proposition and easy to do.
However, the fact is, there are a few things you need to
know before you begin. There is no doubt as a freelancer you will reap the
benefits of being your own boss and without commitment to any employer.
However, you must consider certain factors while starting
your business because small mistakes at the beginning of your freelancer career
may be bad for you in the future. It is crucial to have a good strategy in
place before starting a home business
online.
Work on standard rates:
As a freelancer you must set a standard rate for your
service and never go below it. In other words, you should not accept just any
work at any rate of pay that comes your way. Be selective in your choice of
work and always take assignments you know you can do. Be clear and concise
about the type of work you want to do and never compromise.
Also, do not just jump into any home business without proper
knowledge about it. For example, if any particular work grabs your interest,
and you do not have the knowledge or skills to do it, then ensure that you get
that knowledge before accepting the challenge.
Always meet deadlines:
One of the most important qualities a freelancer must have
when starting a home business is
being able to meet deadlines set by clients.
Always make sure you meet your deadlines and never drag it
out because this would have a negative effect on the success of your business. Once
you loose the trust of your client, it is very difficult to win back their
trust and confidence.
Make sure that you honor your commitment and always deliver on
time. However, it may not be possible to meet the deadlines on every occasion
due to unforeseen events. In the event of such circumstances, it is always best
to inform your client in advance so that it is justified.
Find better options:
One of the best benefits of being a freelancer is that you
can work on multiple assignments from your clients at the same time. Do not
restrict yourself to a particular client. This is because at some point, your
client may decide to do business with someone else, leaving you without a
paycheck.
Another reason you may not consider doing business with a
single client is that some other client might be ready to pay more for the same
work or even less. Therefore, you need to explore the various options and
choose the appropriate ones for better productivity and profit.
In conclusion, as a freelancer, the above points are some of
the most important ones you need to remember when starting a home based
business.

I work better under pressure of deadlines when I am doing something for other people. However, I like to have the leisure to develop my own projects. The first case is what Stephen Covey calls a "Quadrant 1" activity ("Important and urgent") whereas the second case is a "Quadrant 2" activity ("Important, not urgent").
We should aim to make as much time as possible for Q2 activities so that we can develop our own projects. Easier said than done!

- HI,
I have used trade shows (not participated) to collect potential clients. For example, the Home & Garden Industry is extremely behind the time in regards to their websites. I attended an Home & Garden Expo in Denver and collected all the companies contact information. I plan on cold calling & mailing information to each business.
It also gave me time to research the industry more, talk directly to the owners in many cases, and learn more about what they need.
