Sleep Apnoea, Shift Work and Your Washing Machine – What On Earth Have They Got In Common?

If you've ever suffered from sleep apnoea then you've no doubt spent plenty of time battling with constant fatigue and tiredness. When your sleep apnoea causes you to stop breathing during the night AND you get up at odd times (shift work), then it's no wonder that you wake up feeling like you've just been hit by a Mac truck!

This disruptive sleep pattern is a bit like interrupting your washing machine as it goes through its wash cycles. (You probably think I've lost my marbles right now but just stick with me here).

You see, just like your washing machine needs to go through certain cycles to complete a wash, so too does your brain when it's asleep.

In order for you to wake up feeling refreshed, it's imperative that you wake up at the end of a completed sleep cycle. (In the perfect world we would because we wouldn't be dictated by our alarm clocks!) . In the example below, your washing machine has 5 'cycles' that it must complete in order for it to wash your clothes properly.

Stage 1: Loading of the machine and adding the powder.

Stage 2: The wash.

Stage 3: The rinse

Stage 4: The spin

Stage 5: The emptying of the machine.

Now imagine if you stopped the washing machine half-way through its cycle and you took out your clothes to wear. I'm picturing wet and soggy underwear here - covered in clumps of washing powder! Not pretty. Your clothes would not be clean and rinsed because you didn't let the machine finish its entire cycle.

This is exactly what happens when you wake up in the middle of a sleep cycle (aka shift workers and sufferers of sleep apnoea). Your brain hasn't finished doing what it's supposed to do.

So when your alarm clock goes off and you stagger out of bed in the middle of the night, your brain has been interrupted making you feel fuzzy and disorientated.

It's like trying to wear your clothes even though your washing machine hasn't finished its cycle. . Have you ever gone into work with your shirt still wet and covered in washing powder stains? I'm thinking (and hoping) not - but this is exactly what you're doing when you push your body to work against its natural sleep cycles.

So to my fellow shift workers and sufferers from sleep apnoea - don't beat yourself up that you're not bouncing out of bed when that alarm clock goes off. You cannot expect to function at 100% when your sleep is constantly being disrupted. Just manage it the best way that you can and if need be - book yourself in for a bit of a nana nap later in the day!

Re: Can Soemone Invent a Longer Day Re: Can Soemone Invent a Longer Day - Hi GT, I think time travel would be better. That way we could just go back a few days and do more work. We'd essentially be able to get more done, and in a sense would be making our days longer. However, do you think maybe that if we traveled to the past, then it would erase what we had previously done? Or, no matter what we do, the outcome remains the same, like in [i:1rij0ml4]The Time Machine[/i:1rij0ml4]?
Re: HOw to market a B2B consulting company Re: HOw to market a B2B consulting company - How about providing a white paper on Common security holes (only mention the ones that the prospect can easily and inexpensively fix themselves). Towards the end explain that there are other greater security flaws that exist and that you provide a "Free Security Consultation and Report". They could use this report to get cheaper quotes but you are getting so much more... you get face time with the company and get to build rapport with them. I know of a company here in Toronto that does Energy Audits on your home and provide you with a report on ways you can save energy- they also also offer to fix it for you through their suppliers. they had a story run on them on Earth Day this year and they were bombarded with over 200 calls in one day to have these audits done. The audits are done for free. You could write up a shocking story on Security and holes that exist within businesses today and submit this story to the newspapers business edition or to a Trade Magazine written for the industry you are trying to serve. Most journalists may pick up this article and feature it or interview you directly. Also, I would redesign your site to be more Information-based to educate potential prospects (how to solve common security issues) rather than it being all about the company - people are more interested in solving their problem and often aren't searching the internet for a particular company by name unless it is well established. So give them juicy information freely. note: When I first heard this idea of giving away free information about solving a problem I was hesitant to use it in my web design business. I gave it a try anyways and the amazing part was that even the easy inexpensive things I advised them they could fix in their websites they offered to pay me to do it for them - from there I was able to upsell them on greater improvements. I've since sold this company - but it was fun!
