Start A Home Business Working With Your Spouse

In our last article, we talked about how to start home business successfully with your spouse. Here are some additional tips that will help you and your spouse run that business successfully.

1. Have a set time each and every week to discuss the next week. You can use this time to divide up tasks and responsibilities and go over the important action items that need to be done. For example, you can schedule this during the mornings on Mondays. It should take place the same time all of the time otherwise it is easy to forget.

2. Divide up tasks and responsibilities and write down which of you is responsible for completing each task that is necessary. One way you can do this is to have a huge white board in your home office. You can have a column for each spouse as well as other columns if you have employees. It is also a good idea to have a large calendar to schedule promotions, events and other day specific activities.
3. Use a giant calendar to keep tabs on appointments for business and family appointments using colors. This way if you have events with your kids you can plan your business around them, which is one of the benefits to starting a home business.
4. Identify what each of you does well in the business and focus on it. The areas where you are weak at, hire someone else to do those tasks. Decide what the reporting relationships are going to be for any new hires (they should report to one of you only) so that everyone is on the same page.
5. Meet before you start home business to plan out household responsibilities. You should know who is going to pick the kids up from school and take them to their various activities. You should determine who is going to do the cooking and the cleaning around the house. Determining these tasks in advance will save you lots of frustration.
6. Identify the skills each of you contributes to the business in the event one of you needs to step down at some point. Think about how much it will cost to hire someone to do what you do. This is very important especially if you have a situation where one of you needs to take off for pregnancy or other family events require one of you to take off from the business for some time.
Taking steps now will help you, your spouse and your business over the long haul. The end result is the process of starting your home business will be smoother.

Re: What is Your Favorite Thing About Owning A Business? Re: What is Your Favorite Thing About Owning A Business? - [quote="freddyb45":1t3lpfi8]For me it's the fact that all the time and effort you put in is worth a lot more, due to it making you "business" more profitable. Working for yourself is also a positive, although employing people you can trust is quite different.[/quote:1t3lpfi8] I like this idea. Working for yourself means you are investing in your own future, not someone else's, although there is value in working for someone else first to gain experience and confidence. Working for yourself does not automatically mean success, fame and fortune. For most entrepreneurs, it takes much work and dedication to get to the point of financial success and comfort - sometimes years. But the benefit is, again, you know you are investing in yourself and building equity for your own future. GT :-]
