Genomics And Its DNA Forensics Application
The DNA forensics is enlisted to be among the areas to benefit from genomics. If utilized brilliantly, the DNA identification could be very efficient. Certain fractions of the DNA sequences that differ mostly among people should also be utilized. These said fractions should be in enormous quantities to defeat the inevitable piece of fact that human propagation is not random.
With the investigation of DNA sequences distinct to an organism, it is feasible to identify that organism. However, when it comes to identifying individuals belonging to the same species, researchers are quick to admit that the process is less precise. It is expected to improve when technologies used for DNA sequencing will also innovate. By that time, even the direct comparison of huge DNA segments and genomes are possible, and thus, accelerating the identification of an individual.
Identifying individuals is done by having forensic scientists examine 13 DNA loci that differs from one person to another. The data are used to make a DNA profile or DNA fingerprint of that particular individual. For the 13 sets of 13 loci, there is likelihood that another person shares similar DNA profile.
The human genome or the DNA is helpful in many ways for forensic identification. Among these are for identification of potential suspects whose DNA may have matched the evidence left at the crime scenes, exculpation of individuals who have been accused wrongly of certain crimes, identification of victims of calamities and crimes, and establishment of paternity and other similar familial relationships.
Even the ecology benefits from genomics. With their genes identified, it is possible to identify which species are endangered and protected. Other organisms and bacteria that are harmful to the air, food, soil and water can be identified with efficacy.
In terms of medical, patients who need organ transplant may also benefit from DNA sequence as it would be effective to find organ donors who will match the recipients. In livestock, researchers can determine the pedigree for livestock and seed breeds.
According to scientists only one-tenth of one percent of DNA varies from one person to another. These varying loci are utilized to produce a DNA profile of an individual. This is done by utilizing samples taken from bone, hair, blood and other body products and tissues.
For criminal cases, the DNA profile is created by acquiring samples of evidence from crime scenes and a suspect. The researchers extract the DNA, and analyze it if there is particular set of DNA markers or regions. The scientists will then find the regions in a DNA sample by taking small pieces of DNA called probes. Each of these probes will look for a complementary DNA sequence in the sample, and bind to it.
The probes that are bound to DNA samples generate a unique pattern for a person. The forensic scientists will make a comparison to the DNA profiles to ascertain if the suspect's sample matches the evidence sample.
A region is not distinct to a person if two DNA samples are similar at four or five loci. There are great chances that the samples came from the same individual. If, however, none of the sample profiles matched, the person has not contributed the DNA at the crime scene.
