Home Based Business: Baking

Before you decide baking to be your niche in home based business, you need to ensure that it is your hobby or interest. Many business consultants advise doing business with something that is part of your life—whether as passion or hobby.

Just like any home business, start with planning. Plan your recipes well. There are several specialties in baking. It is wise to define which is yours. To determine this, evaluate your skills and knowledge. Are you good at baking cakes? You can also bake cookies, brownies and cupcakes.

If you are adept in all of these specializations, then you can plan the schedule for baking the goodies. Next, you need to plan on your working kitchen and equipment. To make everything organized, allot a small portion of your kitchen to baking.

If you have an existing oven fit for home based business, then you can save on some of its equipment. What you need to work out are the materials. Set aside specific materials from baking to wrapping, so they will not mix with materials for personal purposes.

The common materials include baking pans, cookie sheets, decorating utensils and supplies. For wrapping, ensure that you have enough supplies of boxes, wax paper, foil and plastic wrap.

Inquire at the local government for rules and regulations regarding home business. The policy varies according to the State. Know if you need to secure necessary license and permits. Baking business operators are required to have business permit and health certificate.

If such is also the case for home baking, then you need to know the standards for passing the health certificate. Not only is this a requirement; but it can also be an effective tool for marketing. Having met the standards for health and cleanliness can mean more customers.

Besides these permit and license, some States may also require you to apply for sales tax certificate even when it is home based business. Visit your State tax department to know the requirements. Its purpose is for you to collect sales tax on all goods sold.

Marketing is another plan to prepare. You need to identify your market. You can start targeting kinder and preparatory schools or the first primary years in elementary education. Baked goodies are kid’s first love.

You can also visit offices and business enterprises and offer your baked goodies. To attract them and make them your instant customers, bring samples for them to have free taste, along with goodies for sale.

Do not forget your neighbors, former officemates and relatives. They should constitute the foundation of your clientele. Since you have your business permit, you can put up a signage of your home based business on your fence or gate.

The name of your baking business should be something friendly and attractive to customers. Your signage should bear it, and so should your business cards and portfolio. Creating your portfolio is an attractive and effective marketing tool as your potential clients have clearer picture of how sumptuous your confections are.
