Ensure that your yard is dog-proof. Prepare the area where the nursing mother cares for her puppies. If you can create a division for females, it is better. Then, you have to know the laws and ordinances in your State.

Some local governments require dog breeders to secure necessary zoning permits and licenses before they can proceed. There are also few local governments requiring dog breeders to meet certain requirements even when your dog breeding business is limited to two dogs.

When you have completed the legal aspect of your home-based business, you have to choose your niche. Decide the breed of dog you want to cultivate. Two things can help you on this. First, consider your interest. If you choose to raise the dog breed that you are passionate about, your chances at success are high.

Second, ascertain the breed that has high demand. Know which breeds are popular in your local community and the neighboring cities. Sometimes, breeders capitalize on the trends. Called as "Designer breeds", these dogs include Labradoodles, American Kennel Club or Canadian Kennel Club. These breeds can be registered.

It is also wise to know the breed that is compatible with your weather and other environmental conditions. You will have lesser losses when your dogs are suitable to your area. In addition, it is wiser to focus on one breed when you are still starting with your dog breeding home-based business.

Each breed is unique with strengths, weaknesses and needs. Get as much information as you can about your chosen breed because the characteristics, size and energy level of your dog will determine the things you will prepare for your business to prosper.

Develop your business plan. Set your budget for their basic needs, and itemize your expenses each month. To help minimize your expenses, learn how to groom dogs, trim their fur, toes and nail, brush their canine, de-worming and vaccinations.

Two weeks or a month before the female delivers her puppies, advertise your litters for sale to allow you more selling time. Once the puppies start to wean, their value depreciates. Advertising the litters earlier will also give owners time to prepare their money for deposit or purchase them right away even when they have to wait few weeks before they can pick up the puppy.

You will have lesser income when you start to advertise your litters until they are weaned. By the time you found someone who will buy it, the puppy has already grown into a dog and your profits are cut almost by half.

Dog breeding home-based business can start from a hobby. This tension relieving endeavor, when used with good marketing plan and attitude can be a good source of income.
