The internet is a good source of information as many online shops sell custom jewelry. You can also scan magazines and observe the latest trends. If you have creative skills, it is best to use them in making your own unique styles, shapes and sizes.

Make a scrapbook on your creations. That shall serve as your guide in creating your collections. Develop a business plan. Plan the stores from which you shall buy your materials and tools. It is not advisable to buy in bulk for a startup home-based business. But try to get discounts when you buy at higher than $100.

If you live within the city, you may be allowed to setup a home office. Check with your local clerk to know whether you need to register your business. Registering your business requires a business name. Select a name that will reflect on your creations.

Registration for business is only the beginning. You need to secure your resale tax number from your State's Department of Revenue Sales Tax Division. There is a small amount to pay for a document which bears your tax exemption number.

Your tax exemption number entitles you to buy materials from certain suppliers at wholesale prices without sales tax. However, there are some stores that require a minimum purchase to activate such privilege.

With sales tax, you are required to collect sales tax on all items you sell directly to people within your State, and at shows or other in-person venues in some States. If you plan to market your home-based business in other States, you may need a sales tax permit for that State.

Plan your marketing strategy. Your marketing strategy is the backbone of your home business. Consider a budget to promote your custom jewelry collections to people who are eager to buy them. Advertisement may be expensive, but you can do it with restrictions.

The ads section of the local newspaper is a good platform for your advertisement. The internet has many resources to promote your home-based business as well. There are sites such as the Officelive that allow you to create your own website for free.

Having your own website is very rewarding as your chances for income potential is improved. More people will know about your custom jewelry business, and they can also see photos of your creations. Pamphlets are also a nice marketing tool which you can leave in store counters, with the permission of the store manager.

Your business cards can be a powerful tool as well. Include a business card as you wrap your jewelry. You can even make your specialized business card as a container of your earrings, necklaces, bracelets, anklets and rings. Ensure that your home-based business name and contact details are visible on the card.
