Home-based Business: Jelly and Jam

Food business can make a good home-based business, if it is a small scale. Go and visit your local government office for zoning laws. Even when it is a food business, some States allow food processing to be done at home with few restrictions.

Certified kitchen enables you to make process foods and food products at your own kitchen though the licensing and certification may be expensive. If your financial resources are not enough for this requirement, you may rent out kitchen from commercial sector.

Restaurants, bakeries and coffee shops may lend their kitchen for you on small amount and specific time so you can prepare and make your home-made jams and jellies. You can also ask permission from churches, community centers, senior centers and other organizations that have certified kitchen.

Getting the necessary business permit or license for your home-made business may also be a worthy expenditure, after all, you will need a business name for product labeling and business promotion. If you have your business tax identification number, you may use such number to enjoy wholesale prices when you buy your ingredients.

Labeling your product is very important. To make it attractive, you may use friendly and appropriate images like the fruit source of your home-made jellies and jams. You can also make a comic image of a friendly farmer with his produce.

Include in your label the ingredients, the date of expiry, and contact details. Pricing your product is also very important as this can be a basis for your profits. Consider all your expenses to complete the product.

This includes the charges for printing your label, the amount for purchasing the empty glass jars, the charges for renting out commercial kitchen, promotional expenses and the necessary ingredients. For your labor, the recommended amount is to mark up 10-20% on the price.

Of course, if the clients buy your products by volume, you may have to offer discount prices. You can sell your home-based business products to farmer's markets, grocery stores, bakeries, accessory shops, Saturday markets, holiday fairs, flea market and other exhibits.

You can also propose your products to be displayed at gourmet food stores and gift stores. Ensure that you have the necessary marketing tools to convince the business owners to have your jellies and jams displayed on their stores.

Brochures, business cards and samples of your jams should be left with the store manager/owner. You can also promote your home-made products on the internet. There are sites that allow you to create your own website for free.

You can take advantage of this service to sell your products. You may leave your contact information so clients can reach you easily. If you have social network account, you can also employ their services to promote your home-based business.

You can also visit day-care centers and corporate offices to offer your jams and jellies. For this, you may need to use a vehicle for a safe and easy transportation of your jams and jellies. Finally, keep a good track of your home-based business by doing bookkeeping on your own.

A new study based on four years of data from men and women in a training program for microenterprises finds that they come out the same in quality scores. "However, women scored significantly better on the presentation of their plan to judges," conclude the study's authors, Ronald G. Cook, Paul Belliveau, and Christine Lentz of Rider University, in a paper presented at a recent meeting of the Small Business Institute. [/quote:ka7lg35i] What do you guys think?
