In turn, this will create an opportunity to have a substantial transformation of food and nutrition industry in the United States and some countries. Nutrigenomics is the scientific study of the way certain genes react to given nutrients. Scientists seek to study and understand the relationship between what people eat and how the genes function. The objective of nutrigenomics is to promote optimal health through optimum nutrition. Personalized nutrition, on the other hand, is the application of what has been learned from nutrigenomics as far as nutrition is concerned.

The objective of personalized nutrition is to maximize their own long-term health and that of their family's based on their knowledge on nutrition and their genetic constitution. Personalized nutrition is geared towards wellness and changing nutritional behavior. The public will learn about their genetics in two ways: directly by genetic testing, or indirectly by family history or personal experience.

The concept of personalized nutrition is more than just planning for what should be prepared on the table. It involves information gathering and action. Those who know about nutrigenomics and personalized nutrition will make decisions about food shopping based on their genetic constitution. It covers a range of activities from information accumulation to selecting food and nutrition products.

Today, despite the lack concrete findings about nutrition that can be tailored to a particular genetic sub-groups, there has been a number of food companies offering genetic testing and tailoring a diet after the DNA has been profiled and analyzed. Studying the family history especially about genetic diseases will prompt many to do research on which foods may have which nutrients to combat such diseases.

The impact of nutrigenomics is now felt in the food industry, beauty and skin care products, and pharmacology. Organizations from different fields such as food production, food packaging, grocery stores and pharmacies, health testing companies, insurance companies, health organizations, nutrition advisors, and food health information sources are likely to make changes in their products.

In the next couple of years, industry from food, beauty and skin health and pharmaceuticals will tailor products based on the genetic makeup of certain individuals or sub-group of individuals. Together with the new innovations in products are a variety of services to profile, and analyze the DNA.

Further, as scientists reveal more information on the scientific study of nutrition and genes, there will be more issues on the bio-ethics of nutrigenomics and personalized nutrition. There will be more arguments on who the legal entities to conduct genetic testing are, and how it would affect the confidentiality of such information.

Nonetheless, for now, majority of the people in the United States and other countries in Europe, Latin America and Asia are exerting their own effort to gather more information about the emerging scientific study. With this new science, more people are concerned about their health, and thus, make changes on their nutritional behavior.
