What To Expect In A Genetic Consultation
A Genetic Consultation is a process of communicating to a concerned individual or family about the occurrence or risk of occurrence of a genetic disease. Such process is driven by five objectives which should be attained by a geneticist, a genetic counselor or any person who received appropriate training, at the conclusion of the Genetic Consultation.
First, the genetic professional must be able to acquire and comprehend the medical facts involving the concerned individual-and at some point, his or her immediate and extended family-and including management.
Second, the professional must be able to acknowledge and appreciate the contribution of heredity to the disorder, as well as the risk of occurrence in specific family members whether immediate, extended or future.
Third, once the risk has been established the geneticist or genetic counselor should be able to understand and recognize the alternatives in deal with such risk.
Fourth, help the concerned individual in making them understand the impact of such risks and the availability of courses of action that are in harmony with the individual's unique beliefs, standards, and background in religion, race, ethnic and other concerns. If such independent decision has been made, the geneticist is expected to abide to it.
Fifth, provide the best possible adjustment to the illness in the affected individual or family member or to the risk of recurrence of such illness.
To get started, the geneticist or genetic counselor will obtain information on the detailed medical and family history, recommend a specialized physical exam that is initiated by a medical geneticist, and order appropriate laboratory tests. The physical examination shall include extensive physical measurements and photographs.
The medical records will be compiled dating back to the past when the individual and affected family member have had medical consultations, laboratory tests taken, diagnosis and treatments. Even when at the point of Genetic Consultation, a diagnosis has been made, the genetics professional may still conduct extensive family history and initiate physical examination, however limited.
The healthcare provider of the individual who sought the consultation may receive a written report from the genetics profession. The said report is prepared after the results of the laboratory tests are known, and often includes a literature search of similar cases. After the report is prepare, it is presented to the individual concerned and or family in a counseling meeting wherein all the questions that the individuals and family members would like to raise, shall be answered in details.
Among other things, the geneticist professional and or the healthcare provider will explain the etiology and nature of an illness, its history and prognosis, the manner of inheritance, the risks of recurrence, and possibilities for pre-natal diagnosis. Though it is non-directive, the consultation session is carried out to meet the educational level and background of the individual concerned.
Should the pre-natal diagnosis is decided by the concerning individual, the couple must also submit themselves to a family pedigree. If the couple desires to have other specialized diagnostic procedure such as amniocentesis, the genetics center may make the necessary arrangements.
The treatment for a genetic disease can be individualized and or specialized. The concerning individuals may also be informed of other specialized services like consulting a nutritionist for dietary therapy for a metabolic illness, for instance.

Re: HOw to market a B2B consulting company
- How about providing a white paper on Common security holes (only mention the ones that the prospect can easily and inexpensively fix themselves). Towards the end explain that there are other greater security flaws that exist and that you provide a "Free Security Consultation and Report".
They could use this report to get cheaper quotes but you are getting so much more... you get face time with the company and get to build rapport with them.
I know of a company here in Toronto that does Energy Audits on your home and provide you with a report on ways you can save energy- they also also offer to fix it for you through their suppliers.
they had a story run on them on Earth Day this year and they were bombarded with over 200 calls in one day to have these audits done. The audits are done for free.
You could write up a shocking story on Security and holes that exist within businesses today and submit this story to the newspapers business edition or to a Trade Magazine written for the industry you are trying to serve. Most journalists may pick up this article and feature it or interview you directly.
Also, I would redesign your site to be more Information-based to educate potential prospects (how to solve common security issues) rather than it being all about the company - people are more interested in solving their problem and often aren't searching the internet for a particular company by name unless it is well established. So give them juicy information freely.
note: When I first heard this idea of giving away free information about solving a problem I was hesitant to use it in my web design business. I gave it a try anyways and the amazing part was that even the easy inexpensive things I advised them they could fix in their websites they offered to pay me to do it for them - from there I was able to upsell them on greater improvements. I've since sold this company - but it was fun!
Simple way to avoid Cold Calling
- Gary,
A chiropractor I work with hates cold calling (me too!) and he uses a technique to warm people up to using his services - it's so simple!
In Sales your dealing with 3 pools of people:
1. Strangers
2. Prospects
3. Returning Customers
You need to move people from one pool to the next. We'll concentrate on #1 and #2 as it's most relevant to your question.
My Clients does the following (you just have to tailor it to your situation - be creative).
My Client (we'll call him Bob) Bob leverages his time and resources to only get people that need his offer (pain relief) to put their hand up. Dealing with Strangers can get expensive and they don't like to be told what to do as they have no trust or relationship built with him.
So to get Strangers to put their hands up he writes up an offer with a free report on a particular pain relief - let's say lower back pain (note: he can simply just change lower back pain to neck pain and have a new report). and uses multiple marketing vehicles to promote the Free report - magazines, newspaper, forums, postcards, private clinics etc.
The only people picking up this information are the very people Bob would like as customers as they have Lower back pain. Bob's Free report ends with him stating his services and includes a Free in-house Consultation with no obligation.
You'd be surprised at how easily Bob converts Strangers into Prospects. Note: They become prospects when they ask for the Free Guide and in exchange provide their contact details. This gives Bob unlimited opportunity to contact them for the Free in-house consultation with no obligation to continue using him.
At this stage Bob's ability to close the sale lies in his office providing good customer service, Bob's ability to help the prospect and provide value at the free in-house consultation.
Notice, he hasn't had to pick up the phone to COLD-CALL his Stranger pool or his Prospect pool.
Hope that example helps to increase your prospecting!
Usable Service?
- Hi,
I have been sitting on an idea for quite some time, but I'm not sure how much demand this business will have. I've found that over the years, every organization that I have worked with, I have simplified work processes drastically, saving time and resources. (money).
I have talked to a good friend of mine who is a computer engineer who can setup unique company network systems to enhance sharing and security of information within an organization so that sensitive information is kept off of the world wide internet but can still be shared within. I've put together a very large list of my own ideas that I found worked wherever I went and feel that I can improve a businesses productivity by far and cut expenses with various changes to processes and have adopted a bunch of ideas from an IT Service Management Framework course that I have taken to create an office work flow that promotes efficiency.
My business would first run a survey to understand that nature of your business and then we would set an in person meeting/consultation based on the results of the survey if there seems to be a need for change. This would be done outside of normal business hours to avoid disruption to daily activities.
Once the consultation is complete, we will then begin training a small group and run a test environment to ensure there are no breaks in the processes before going live with them. Finally we will start periodic training sessions to transition all staff over to the new process.
This would roughly run about 1 week (or more) in length from the time of the survey completion to full transition and could be provided to departments or entire organizations.
My estimate to charge for such a service is:
Initial Need Survey: Free
In Person Consultation: $249/day estimating 1 day after regular working hours)
First group training: $249/day (estimating 1 day - during work hours)
Allow 2 days for test environment to work and look for glitches in process(No charge)
Fix processes if needed (No charge)
Final training: $249/day (onsite during work hours)
Total estimated days: 5 ($249 per day)
After the in person consultation, I will provide cost saving estimates based on the old work process compared to what I can change.
The way I see it is, if I can save an organization over $1000 per month, the service pays for itself in it's first month or two.
Off the top of my head, I can save an organization roughly 1 hour per week per person in productive time. If an office of 15 employees are paid an average of $16/hour, I can save the company about $240 in productive time per week plus whatever supply expenses that I can cut back on. My service can cost around $1,245 once but save a company over $12,000 after one year of adopting my practices.
Sorry for the long rambling on description. If you read it, feed back is much appreciated.
