Project Management Principles Applied to Online Marketing

Time management is extremely important to an online marketer. Because there are so many different types of marketing activities and because the activities are reproduced through many campaigns, it is very helpful to create a system to help you stay focused and become more productive.

By definition a project is temporary with a defined beginning and end. Once a project schedule is defined for each marketing activity, the schedule can be tweaked and used again, and the timeline can be shortened as the learning curve is overcome and the skills are honed. Since the activities are basically the same each time, this formal plan will free your time for the creative aspects and allow you to carry out the activities on autopilot.

You will move through the defined five process groups, or stages in the project life cycle, which are:

Initiating

Planning

Executing

Controlling and Monitoring

Closing

as well as the processes in the nine knowledge areas. These are

Project Integration Management

Project Scope Management

Project Time Management

Project Cost Management

Project Quality Management

Project Human Resource Management

Project Communications Management

Project Risk Management

Project Procurement Management

Be sure to record actual times spent in each phase so you can continually refine your plan and shorten the timeframe to bring each project to market.

Develop a Work Breakdown Schedule and subsequent Project Plan by defining all the activities for the specific marketing strategy. For instance, for an article marketing campaign, you need to define your target audience, define your keyword, select your topic, write the article, write the title, and distribute the article. Break down the steps and create a project plan as well for online ad campaigns.

Be sure to do a post-mortem evaluation of the project in the Closing phase. By re-using this plan you will find that you can produce at a much higher rate during successive iterations. You will also be able to evaluate the better methods by tracking the time required, cost, and effectiveness of each campaign.

By using these time tested techniques, you will find it easier and easier to produce the results you desire!

In the past, there's been some interest voiced about adding a "Social Media Marketing", "Online Marketing", "Internet Marketing" or "Online Promotion" category. I'll implement [u:1g2tv6tf]ONE[/u:1g2tv6tf] of those new categories, but can someone first tell me what the difference would be between the existing "Marketing" section and one of those new options mentioned above? Thanks

The reason I'm asking is because people may not know what social media marketing is , while that would make me vote for it to learn more, but not every thinks like that. Also, online marketing could capture more attention when people spot in on the list. Shri

Re: Kevin's Case Study #11 - A New Forum Category? - [quote:31qpen1j]This is just my opinion, but I consider the prospective categories, Online Marketing, Internet Marketing and Online Promotion, as being pretty much one and the same - just different words that different people use.[/quote:31qpen1j] I completely agree! Those are all just "internet marketing" as far as I am concerned. And I normally would have voted for internet marketing, however I chose social media marketing simply because there are more than enough IM forums out there already.
