Intro to Social Networking
We've all likely heard the term ‘Social Networking' by now, but surprisingly not everybody knows what it means.
Social networking can be described as a gathering or ‘networking' of individuals into to specific groups, like a community or a neighborhood, usually based on existing relationships (family and friends) or common interests. Social networking can take place in person, especially in schools, in the workplace, or at social events, but with the advent of the internet and the ability to reach millions of people at once, social networking is most popular online.
Online social networking takes place on websites that are specifically designed for people to ‘meet' together and share what's going on in their lives. Social networking websites are virtual online communities of internet users. Communities are built based on the same criteria as an in-person network. Website members look for others that share a common bond, whether the bond they share is that they are already family or friends, or mere strangers that have common interests such as hobbies, religion, or politics.
When you sign up to a social networking website you can add personal information about yourself and begin to add online ‘friends'. You can search for people you already know or you can look to meet new people who share common interests.
Unlike in-person networking, like in a school or your workplace, the internet gives you access to people from all over the world. You can literally make friends and build relationships with any internet user anywhere in the world!
Because of the huge potential to network with millions of people all over the world, many internet entrepreneurs have made wise use of social networking sites to build their businesses by ‘relationship marketing' one-on-one with potential customers. If you are, or are thinking about becoming, an internet entrepreneur, make sure that you add social networking to your marketing efforts. Many internet users have become immune to ‘old school' marketing methods and they can tell when you're trying to ‘sell' them. They want to know that they're dealing with a real person. ‘Relationship marketing' using social networking is a great way to build a rapport and trust with your potential customers.
Get started with these top social networking sites and dive right in:
Facebook
Twitter
MySpace
LinkedIn
Start adding new friends and tell people about yourself. You'll be surprised how fast your network can grow with a little effort each day.
