This requires that you get your head around your site's subject matter and the products you may be offering. It is imperitive you understand this before targeting. You must identify not only the type of traffic or visitors you desire on your site, but also the kind of traffic or visitors you don't want.

So let's get to it. Simply put this is here because of its relevance to the topic and importance in achieving the overall objective and the results you ultimately seek. You may also find that a level of imagination is needed. It's something I have picked up and it is very useful in the internet business sphere.

A fundamental Guaranteed SEO principle is the simple reciprocal link principle - find websites with decent rankings and plenty of traffic, and trade links with them. Do not just tke it for granted that because you're just starting with a site that a highly traffic'ed authority site isn't going to give a little new site owner like you a link of any sort?

There is 1 way to get an answer. - Ask them.

It will help if you have some kind of relationship with the webmaster or site owner. Even without a relationship, occasionally you can use the time-honored free market tactic of bribery and offer to pay for getting a link from an authority website. Request a link. If you get turned down, say "Would you consider accepting $100 to backlink to me?" You'd be amazed at how many site owners will be eager and accept your proposal!

This works the best with private sites that have a good rank in the top ten for targeted keywords. There is no point in trying to get a backlink from CNN or TIME or Cosmopolitan's site. But if you're selling diet products, and $50 will buy you a link from a small site that's ranked well for "low-carbohydrate desserts," you're probably going to be better-off buying that link than buying $50 worth of Adwords advertising. This also can't hurt your own search engine ranking.

Make sure you have a written agreement regarding exactly what the link will say (you want your keywords in it) and the duration of the link - a year, 6 months, forever etc.

If you want guaranteed search engine optimization that is at least as effective as your competitors, a similar technique involves finding all the websites that link to your competitors, and offering them a financial incentive to add your link to their websites. You can find these websites by using Google and typing in "link:yourcompetitorslink[dot]com." Getting these backlinks to your site will contribute to your website as much as it does theirs, thereby canceling out their ranking advantage from these links.

Re: Does a New Company need a "Big" PR firm? - I agree with SHri, it really depends on the target audience and how much service you really need. if you are doing National campaign than you want a firm that has the National contacts. Lots of smaller companies dont have as many resources or connections. Many firms are going to a pay for performance model which I think will do the PR and advertising industry good. no more $5000 retainers for sending out a couple of press releases - no matter how well written or targeted! if they dont get picked up, they dont get paid. J
Re: Alexa Ranking Goals - LOL, I spoke too soon. Within a few hours of my post, Alexa updated the Traffic Rank on the toolbar. Note however that the 3 month Traffic Rank on Alexa.com has still not been updated...
Re: help wanted in u.k. - Hi Brendan, Please dont apologize for feeling like you dont know or understand enough business. At least you know you have some things to learn and are willing to do that. One of the best things you can do write now is start studying business plans and learning about market research. You can find some amazing resources online and at the library. Before you spend the money on a patent you can be gathering crucial data and testing the viability of the product. One of my favourite resources is a book called "The Art of the Start". Guy K. (I dont know how to spell his last name). You can also visit a local enterprise centre/business centre. I'm sure you have one close by. They can help you on a personal level to know what steps to take to start. good luck. We are here - we just need to know how to best help. Thanks for writing back!
Re: Who did your logo design? - There are indeed a ton of those logo sights where you can get cheap work done. I have an inhouse design studio called Ripple, where we offer start up packages for business for $500. I think a lot of new entrepreneurs dont realize the impact that their logo does have on their branding and positioning. We take people through a complete creative process which I know they value. By using the $25 sites etc. you really have no claim on them if they do infringe on someone else idea.. But hey...to each his own.. I like to think that you get what you pay for - and while I dont think you need to spend thousands...you should research and really understand what you are getting into. Your logo needs to be something you can use for 5-10 years at least.....so it has to include your big vision..
