Understanding what a Link Network is, its SEO and Page Rank Impact

Understanding what a Link Network is, its SEO and Page Rank Impact
At a high level , there are 3 factors that your link network will influence in respect to page rank and what you must understand about them.
1. The Quantity of External Links
The quantity of external links to a page, suggest to Google that the page is good. I mean if an external source has taken the time to link back to a particular page it must be for a reason. However because it is feasible fairly easily to synthesize hugevolumes of links analyzing the quantity is only a little section of Google's assessment.
2. The Authority of the External Links
Essentially when another web site links to a page it transfers some of its authority to the page it is linking to. So if a site with a page rank of zero links to one of your pages, Google factors "zero" into this part of its assessment. Although Google's exact algorithm is a well kept secret, it is known that it is important to note that page rank is not a linear scale. i.e. A page rank of 5 does not just have 5 times higher authority than a page with a rank of one. The number ofsearch results is also included as a multiplier. In a case of a total 1000 search results, simply put, a page with rank of five will have at least 80% more authority than a page with a rank of 1. This excludes all the other factors (known and not known) included in the Google algorithm.
External links from higher ranked sites have more authority to share and that authority is what will contribute to the PR of the site it is linking to.
3. Anchor text
Anchor text is used to determine the actual subject of the content and how it's relevant. If the phrase "Guaranteed Search Engine Optimization" , "Guaranteed SEO" or similar phrases are used as the text behind which all the external links is placed Google recognizes this and understands that the destination where the link goes to is about or relevant to "Guaranteed SEO" ,"Guaranteed Search Engine Optimization".
I see so many people dropping their links into as blog comments and on forums, regardless of the subject matter of the websites and their own sites. If you have to choose one of the backlinking tasks to focus on in order to increase your page rank, begin with point 2, and try wherever possible use decent anchor text. Following through with a number of these quality 'well anchored' backlinks will work wonders for page rank.

Page Rank Changes
- Hi Kevin - there is a lot of speculation as to why so many websites lost Page Rank. A few new sites that I've been following also got Page Rank for the first time.
Every time Google does a Page Rank update there are websites that get caught in the crossfire and have to work to get their rankings back up!
www.tobuso.com and www.paperrollshop.com
- Please take a look at these and tell me what I should do. I am too close to them to see it objectively at this point. The main on is the tobuso.com one. The other is just a paper roll side bar project.
I have had a guy working on tobuso.com for about 2 weeks or so. I really dont understand why it doesnt have any Google Page Rank yet. I am starting to move up in the rankings for my targeted keyword but I am lacking in the google Page Rank and cannot figure out why. I guess it may just take more time. See if that is what it looks like to you.
Link Exchange Page Rank
- Hi Shimmy,
You should also look at the PageRank of the site that want to link to you. Most webmasters who look for link exchanges are very new and don't have any authority online. You won't get much benefit from a link with them.
But if the site has a higher Page Rank you are much more likely to benefit.
One way links are always better than link exchanges but you do still benefit from link exchanges with high quality Page Rank sites from my experience.
Nofollow Backlinks
- Martin - I wouldn't rule out interior links. They may appear as 0 Page Rank because they just came online but over time they will gain PR. That Seth Godin inside post that Takuya sent is a Page Rank 5 now.
Russell - Most blogs carry the nofollow link. You should check it out before posting a comment if you're doing it for SEO reasons. You can download a plugin for firefox that tells you which links are nofollow but another way to find out is to go to view --> page source and look next to the external links on the blog comments. If it says "no follow" next to them then Google doesn't count it as a link. Some forums also do "no follow" when you put your website in your signature (mine don't) so you want to check it out before getting too involved.
