6 Of My Favorite Network Marketing Prospecting “No-No’s”
|
| Guest post by: Andy Acciaioli |
Article Overview: These are my favorite 6 “no-no’s” when prospecting for new team members for your group. They center on misrepresentation and going into too much detail which will ultimately scare off any prospect that might be mildly interested in what you have to say.

6 Of My Favorite Network Marketing Prospecting “No-No’s”
When I joined my first network marketing company, I can still recall
the advice that our trainer gave us: under promise and over deliver.
Over the years, I have tried to live by this mlm golden rule.
Over the years, I have compiled a list of “no-no’s” when talking to
prospects. Unfortunately, these top six
have the dubious honor of coming from my own team members.
1.
1.) “We are going to make tons and tons of money.” I despise anyone making a money claim to
me. As an example, outside of our
network marketing industry, one car dealer recently told me that everyone lies
about what they paid for their car just to impress someone. When it comes out of the mouth of a network
marketer, it attempts to make the business opportunity seem too good to be
true. And that’s exactly it: the claim
is too good to be true. Most prospects
can see right through inflated money claims.
2.
2.) “Our product is so in demand, everyone just has
to use it.” Oh, yeah? As far as I know, oxygen ranks pretty far up
there on the everyone just has to use it list.
And the last time I checked, oxygen was free. Face the reality that not everyone wants or
will buy your product. You might even be
talking to a prospect who will never alter their purchasing behavior to even
purchase your product. Move on.
3.
3.) “Our business opportunity is exploding. People are tripping all over themselves to
get into it.” One of my team members who
I learned used this line was told by his prospect: if so many people were
entering your group, why are you wasting time with constantly calling me? Out of the mouths of babes.
4.
4.) “Our comp plan is the best one ever
created. First you get in then you
sponsor 3 more who will all achieve this promotion level within 30 days…that
will promote you to Almost Big Kahuna…now you will be earning a 6.5% commission
on all the reps in your Less Than Big Kahuna Level unless your customer base
falls below 17 active autoships a month…blah, blah, blah.” Seriously, I was with one of my reps when he
started to run the comp plan to a total stranger who was having coffee at a
table across from us. He made MY eyes
glaze over, I imagine this stranger made a resolution to never step foot in
that coffee shop again. (By the way, I
made up the Big Kahuna position levels to protect the network marketing company
involved.)
5.
5.) “We have an upline Executive Director who will
gladly come and conduct every one-on-one business presentation for you. He especially wants my group to grow and that
means he is going to give us his undivided attention.” This was said to a prospect by someone five
or six levels below me. At the time I
had reached a leadership position and was trotting around doing hotel group
meetings practically every night of the week.
I would gladly do a three-way call or do one-on-one’s over lunch or coffee
provided I was in the area. Undivided
attention? I don’t think so. This is a pretty good illustration of raising
a prospect’s expectations over something that was not going to happen.
6. 6.)
“Right now our company is pretty much in a few
states. But this is really ground
floor. We will be expanding
internationally within the next year.”
Funny how my training words never reached down a few levels. I would encourage people to go out and
sponsor the people they knew across the street or across town before trying to
sponsor someone across the globe.
Hope these few simple “no-no’s” help you to better monitor the
prospecting talking points spoken by your team members.
