The Difference Between A LIVE Online Auction And eBay.
|
| Guest post by: Andy Acciaioli |
Article Overview: There are both similarities and differences between LIVE Online Auctions and eBay Auctions. Perhaps the greatest difference of all is when the auction actually ends. With eBay when the time runs out, the auction is over. In a LIVE Online Auction, a bid placed in the last few seconds could add more time to the auction clock giving all bidders an opportunity to participate further.

The Difference Between A LIVE Online Auction And eBay.
Before discussing the main difference of a LIVE (dynamic) Online Auction and an eBay (static) auction, it is essential to get an understanding of the two auction types.
First, we are dealing with products that consumers want. In the case of a LIVE online auction the products are usually placed for auction by the company who is operating the website. In the case of eBay, the products are placed on eBay by other eBay participants.
Second, in the case of LIVE Online Auctions, the products are brand new and packaged in the manufacturer's original packaging. Most products that you find on eBay are products which are not new and have been used: no longer of use to the owner who wishes to dispose of them.
Third, with a LIVE Online Auction, there is an established bidding increment which may not be exceeded. Usually this bidding increment is in terms of a penny (that is why most times you will hear LIVE Online Auctions being referred to as penny auctions). With eBay you are able to bid any amount you like unless otherwise specified.
Fourth, with a LIVE Online Auction, although they have the ability to establish a reserve price, I have never seen any of the auction websites use this feature although I suspect that some have. With eBay not only have I seen this option being used, I have actually used it to protect one of my "treasures" from being scooped up for pennies.
Fifth, the cost of bidding is paid by the bidder when a bid is submitted in a LIVE Online Auction whereas eBay charges a listing fee upfront (to the seller) and then collects a small percentage of the final selling price.
Sixth, the Buy It Now is a feature both types of auction sites use. LIVE Online Auctions use it as a means for the losing bidder to apply all of the money he/she has spent in bidding against the purchase of the product. eBay users can elect this Buy It Now feature and this usually ends the auction for that particular product (unless the seller happens to be selling new products and has additional inventory).
The major difference between LIVE Online Auctions and eBay is that once the end of auction time is reached in eBay, the auction ends. However with a LIVE Online Auction, each time an additional bid is placed during the last 10 or 15 seconds of the auction, the auction clock is reset by an additional 20 or 30 seconds to allow all bidders the opportunity to submit another bid. This is precisely what makes a LIVE Online Auction so dynamic and exciting: the last 10 seconds makes all the difference in the world.
Both types of auctions have their well defined online niches. eBay is perhaps the best known of all the auction websites while LIVE Online Auction websites seem to be finding their own loyal online followers as well.
