‘Til Death Us Do Part. I Don’t Think So.

Guest post by: Andy Acciaioli

Article Overview: As we build our network marketing team, we tend to look at each new team member that joins our group as a long lasting, forever relationship. But the reality is that only a few team members are with your business for any length of time, the rest will come and go.

‘Til Death Us Do Part. I Don’t Think So.

Let’s face it, recruiting someone to join our network marketing opportunity is not easy. And, once they do join our team, we expect them to last forever. That is what we expect but the reality is that most of the people that you sponsor in to your group will leave.

This is not a reflection on you or your leadership. Some people join simply because they are joiners. Others join because they really feel that your business will provide income for them but they simply do not want to leave their comfort zone and work the business. Still others will join because of your enthusiasm and persistence in recruiting them into your business. I have to admit that I have been guilty of the last one more than once…okay, many times.

I remember a statement made to me in an early training class over 20 years ago: “A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still.” Meaning that we may sell someone into our businesses but once the excitement clears, they are still of the same opinion before joining our businesses.

The worse thing for you to do as a business builder is get discouraged when someone decides to quit your business opportunity. Accept the fact that in spite of your best efforts to make sure they were fully trained and fully able to operate their mlm business, it just did not work out.

Ideally it would be our goal to be “married” to our entire team forever. But industry facts tell us – and I repeat this frequently in my articles – at the most we have 63 days to get that newbie to make money.

If they fail to see any money being made and do stay in your business chances are they are doing this because they are “joiners” and are sticking around for the socialization that being involved with your group provides for them.

There are times when you sponsor a real mlm rockstar. He/she will take your business and run with it really hard and achieve all sorts of promotions. Then suddenly you might get a call that he/she has found a better opportunity and will be leaving your group (trying to drag you and whoever he/she has sponsored into this new business of the month opportunity). This is a part of individual behavior within a group dynamic. When this has happened to me, I wish the departing rep(s) all the luck in the world and if they every decide to return, I’ll be here for them. (On two occasions this “it’s okay if you go but if you want to come back, come back” worked out to my advantage. In one case the person left and within a couple of months came back. In the other case the person felt as though I would be disappointed and upset but was not prepared for my “I’ll be here for you should you decide to return” and never left our group.)

In all honesty I can’t take credit for this “I’ll be here” approach. The first network marketing business I was involved with was Amway. After leaving Amway, an upline leader 5 levels above us would call and even stop by and visit with us if he was in the area. He considered us friends even though we were no longer in his business.

In our business, network marketing, a ‘til death do us part relationship is a rarity. Team members come, team members go. The friendships you make along the way could – and should – last forever.

Re: Who hates cold calling? Re: Who hates cold calling? - I saw this and had to chime in. I HATE COLD CALLS. lol its terrible and a wast of my time. Something i have done is gotten online and found all the networking event happening in my area for the next 2 months and i try and go to about 3 a week. Even just for an hour. Dont bring any business cards. Just meet new people ask them alot about what they do, not too much about what i do and follow up the next day or 2. Has worked well
