This article is a lesson in persistence drawn from my own experiences in network marketing and music, and also from a fantastic book called Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill, published in 1937. This remarkable book was 25 years in the making and is based on his Law of Success philosophy from individual achievements of hundreds of the phenomenally success people of his era, such as Andrew Carnegie, Henry Ford, George Eastman and Theodore Roosevelt.

If you haven’t read this book yet, grab yourself a used copy on Amazon and prepare for your thinking to change from the many business insights you will gain.

Here is the cornerstone of this article: “More than 500 of the most successful people this country has ever know, told Napoleon Hill that their greatest success came just one step beyond the point at which defeat had overtaken them! Failure is a trickster with a keen sense of irony and cunning. It takes great delight in tripping one when success is almost within reach.” One of the most common causes of failure is the habit of quitting when one is overtaken by temporary defeat. Every person is guilty of this mistake at one time or another.

So, the story I’d like to tell you from Napoleon Hill’s book is about R. U. Darby and the formative, very profound experience he had with his uncle during the Colorado Gold Rush days. Now, R. U. Darby went on to make millions in the insurance business but the whole template for his success was set during this Gold Rush experience with his uncle.

His uncle came from the east to stake a mining claim in Colorado. Then he went home to raise all the money for mining equipment and returned with his nephew to set up working the mine together. They had great success immediately and struck a big healthy vein of gold, however, after several loads of ore rich with gold, the vein suddenly vanished. They persisted with the mining until debt and discouragement took hold before they finally quit.

They sold the machinery to a junk man for a few hundred dollars, and took the train back home in defeat. Now, this was a wise junkman who called in the expert advise of a mining engineer to see if the Darby’s had miscalculated the fault line…or even understood the concept of how gold moves along fault lines. Sure enough, that was precisely the problem and with the new calculations the junkman found the vein of gold JUST THREE FEET FROM WHERE THE DARBYS HAD STOPPED DRILLING! So, he ended up making millions of dollars from that mine simply because of miscalculation by the Darbys' and the fact they did not seek advise from geological engineering experts.

R.U. Darby learned his lesson from afar though, and realized that you have to learn from experiences. One also has to ask for the advise of others in transmuting desires, goals and dreams into our own personal “vein of gold.”

The Best Business Books Ever: The 100 Most Influential Business Books You'll Never Have Time to Read - this is a fascinating book about the history of Business theory, and I'd recommend it to anybody. 2. The Big Book of Small Business: You Don't Have to Run Your Business by the Seat of Your Pants, by Tom Gegax. Ditto. 3. PADI: The Business of Diving Book Okay, so this book won't be of use to anyone who doesn't want to start a scuba store, but I did, and this book was of course invaluable to me in reaching that goal.
