Millionaire Secrets for Network Marketers: The Beatles

Here is a story about a successful group of millionaire entrepreneurs that we probably all know of, and how we can learn from their millionaire secrets, take these secrets to our own businesses, and give rocket fuel to our financial prosperity in network marketing.

This is a curious story about the Beatles, that extraordinary rock and roll group from the 60’s and 70’s who set the US on fire in 1964 when they performed before millions on the Ed Sullivan Show. It was called the British invasion. I remember exactly where I was then too. I was in my grandparent’s living room in Portland Oregon…and I was blown away, like every teenager then, by how great the energy was in this group!

Now, I just recently listened again to that performance on YouTube and it was pretty funny how raw their talent was. But they had the goods!

I also know exactly where I was 3 years later in 1967 when the Beatles released the recording “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.” We were right on the record store’s doorstep the moment it was released and then up for two entire nights listening to that recording. It was so great! I’m sure you have all had experiences like that where a particular type of music or certain musicians really hit your heart hard with their music.

So let me tell you this strange story about the Beatles. First of all, a friend gave me the book “Outliers: The Story of Success”, by Malcolm Gladwell, to read on the long plane flight when I went to Hamburg Germany for a gig (I’m a classical musician).

Well, much to my surprise, as we were taking off from the Hamburg airport on the return trip home I began reading about the Beatles and how they had gathered their performance chops between the years of 1960 and 1962 in Hamburg Germany playing for endless hours in strip clubs!

Now what they did as entrepreneurs was seize an opportunity, they took a calculated risk, and then they sank their passion and time into the experience. This formative experience catapulted them into success, and this is the level of commitment and work we can give to our goals as well.

Bruno, the strip club owner, went to Liverpool England in 1960 to contract cheap rock and roll bands to bring back to Hamburg to play in his clubs. Through a series of connections he contracted the Beatles and this fateful match began their real journey to success.

Here is a breakdown of the extraordinary number of days and hours Malcolm Gladwell calculates the Beatles performed in those clubs between1960 and 1962: They traveled to Hamburg five times and on the first trip played 106 nights for five or more hours per night. George Harrison once said in an interview that they often played for more than eight hours at a stretch…which is incredible! On their second trip they played 92 times. Their third trip they played 48 times for a total of 172 hours on stage. Their last two months in Hamburg involved another 90 hours of performing. In total they played for 270 nights in just over a year and a half.

Therefore, by the time they had their first success on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964, they had performed as estimated 1,200 times…multiplied by 5 to 8 hours of playing time per gig! This is mind-boggling. Most bands today don’t perform 1,200 times in their entire careers. As Malcolm Gladwell so aptly concludes, “the Hamburg crucible is what set the Beatles apart.”

Here is a contrast for you to ponder: I traveled all the way to Hamburg to perform for just 1 and ½ hours on stage! Then I flew home.

So, again, the lessons we can take from this group of entrepreneurs are: seize an opportunity when it’s in front of you, take a calculated risk, and then sink you passion and time commitment into it.

Once you have spent two years doing the above, then look for a 55 - 60 year old business person that is looking to reduce their time in the business. Trent - the new category is "Social Network and Media" which was put in to compliment the Online Businesses category that currently exists. Overall the new categories are: - Looking For, Networking and Events - Review My... - Social Network and Media - Brags and Rants These came as a result of Ringo doing research on other forums and thinking about what could be improved on ours to give a better experience for everyone. RE: Life isn't fair / 'Ol Boy Network RE: Life isn't fair / 'Ol Boy Network - I certainly won't argue that 'Ol Boy Network practices exist and probably always will to some degree because, yes, people like to work with those like themselves. I am curious, though about reactions to the content and approach of the article itself, particularly given that it is from an HR / Management consultant: 1) What does the phrase "'Ol Boy Network" mean to you? 2) Do readers view his discussion as an impartial observation of the phenomenon or do his comments such as "...is not a bad thing," "it's natural," and "are normal occurences" sound like he's expressing an opinion that the practices are OK to continue because that's how it's always been? 3) Would the nature and direction of the content affect your tendency to hire this individual as a consultant? I tried to explore this with the author himself but he was extremely defensive and somewhat insulting regarding the possibility that his article might be perceived as endorsing the practice. I'm looking for a barometer check.
