How To Start Your Business With Little or No Marketing Budget

So you want to start a business on your own. You want to sell a product that you think is on par with others in the same category or maybe it's better than the others. The only hitch is, that you don't know how to market the product simply because you are starting your venture on a shoestring budget and therefore, you have very little or no money for marketing. In a case like this, how would you promote and advertise your product so that it builds equity in the market?

As a common practice, the marketing budget should be about 2% to 5% of the overall gross sales, but this is not the same for all markets and products. So the first thing you need to do when you start a business is to figure out what your marketing budget would be for the first six months.

You could use the following promotional activities to begin with - events, aggressive advertising, internet marketing, word of mouth, strategic partnerships, public relations and direct marketing. For a low budget start-up unit, the following marketing tools can be useful: Newspaper write-ups - You can get articles that talk about your product in a broader perspective, published in a newspaper. For example, if you are selling a sauna belt, the article can be about the effects of sauna treatment for weight loss. The article can also have a word or two from a famous personality who religiously believes in the sauna treatment.

Direct marketing - Instead of going for expensive marketing techniques when you start a business, go for direct marketing. Keep your target audience limited and specific to reach them in the most effective and the cheapest way. For example, fliers inserted in newspapers and informative emails are two inexpensive direct marketing tools.

Word- of- mouth publicity - Get your friends and colleagues to spread the word about your product. This is the most effective and economical way to advertise. Get your friends and colleagues together for a small gathering and introduce your product to them. Keep in mind not to sell it too aggressively!

Internet marketing - Get people familiar with your product through internet write-ups and blogs. Most enterprises depend upon blogs to garner awareness for their products. This is again an extremely cheap and hassle free exercise. Similarly, market your product via social networking sites. Keep people intimated about new schemes, discounts, product enhancements and other new developments.

Make a website of your product - This is a relatively inexpensive option. Making a website of your product gives you a better chance to display your product and explain its features to millions of eyeballs everyday.

While all these could be effective marketing techniques that you can use when you start a business, you would eventually need to have a more consolidated and planned marketing strategy to promote your product and services. Therefore, keep putting aside a small part of your profits every month for your marketing budget. Use your marketing budget judiciously and keep a track of the results on each front. A marketing tactic that does not give you the desired numbers should be dropped.

All in all, make sure that every penny of your marketing budget is used to effectively project and promote your product. Follow a strategy that convinces your target audience to follow the lead and lets your business grow.

Re: MLM Marketing, youtube, and buzzirk mobile. Re: MLM Marketing, youtube, and buzzirk mobile. - I have experience with MLM too. My initial reaction to the business was "snake-oil salesman" but once I got to understand the "overall business model" I am now an advocate to it. MLM (Multi-Level Marketing) is also known as Network Marketing. I realized an MLM business is no different than any other business. One needs to focus on both words "Network" and "Marketing" and give both equal respect. Some people focus heavily on the Networking part but forget "Marketing". I've started to use Building on a Budget and Magnetic Sponsoring concepts in my NM business and have found that people don't get involved so much because of the product but more because of what you bring to the table as far as marketing systems and support. I have both products listed in my signature. you don't have to buy it as the link to the free videos itself provides you a good understanding of what is required to position yourself as my above paragraph. If you do plan on purchasing it I can tell you that the measly $40 will open your eyes BUT your upline will not be too happy (atleast in the short term) beacuse the system is not duplicateable. I wrote this post as a polar post to Bulmer's reply as I have exhausted the friends and family networking and realized i never really focused on marketing. My leads now are more qualified and open to hearing about my opportunity than the other way around. my 2 cents if you plan on growing an MLM or Networking Marketing business.
Re: Training and Self Development Re: Training and Self Development - Lets dust this one off Offline, budget and TIME, I feel are the reasons Training and Development take a second seat to building your business. Few start ups business have employees and the 1 or 2 partners are busy getting their business off the ground so the loss of 1 to training is a loss of a working partner Start ups are seldom well capitalized until they reach a certain growth and can offer proof of their business model to Angel or Venture Capital Funding - then they have to perform to meet the requirements of the funder. Angel are more ideal because they understand the important of personal development and often may be the source of your further development and training Offline Chamber of Commerce and related organizations offer training, but normally during your business hours and a often at a cost prohibitive for a start-up - I started a dozen companies and never had time or budget for such offerings - SO WHAT IS WRONG THE LIBRARY? Obviously that comment and I were before the INTERNET. So now we have both the LIBRARY and the INTERNET to source our training - FREE I start every Business Plan and Marketing workshop with a personal NEEDS ANALYSIS. We are looking for entrepreneur suitability, skill sets, etc, While Passion, Confidence, Attitude and Commitment are more difficult to change in a workshop - Awareness can be heightened, Take aways include a personal development plan. Yes would be Entrepreneurs can be trained to be entrepreneurs, but the person has to be open to assessment and honest in identifying their shortfalls. Better still Entrepreneurship is not an end itself as the business grows - either train yourself or turn the company over to corporate guru. How many companies ultimately fail because the entrepreneur would not turn lose of the reigns Be honest with your needs, take time for your needs development! INTERNET INTERNET, where you when I went to college? YOU can do learn and do anything and with the INTERNET and FORUMS such as this are ideal for LEARNING your TRADE Budget, what budget, EXPERTS here share and help you for FREE, all your need it TIME
