Why are only a few successful in MLM?

People often ask why only a few are successful in the MLM business. To answer this, you must first know that it is not just the MLM business, but only a few make it big in any kind of business. Secondly, most of the MLM business owners do not have any prior experience in running such a business and are not sure how they can be successful. They make mistakes which are common with all new business owners.

Here are a few of the key reasons why a majority of MLM business fails:

  1. They lack a vision: If you ask most of the MLM business owners, they say that they are only trying the MLM business and merely testing the waters. They are totally dependent upon the MLM company for guidance and usually do not take any initiative on their own. They lack a proper vision and do not plan their success. It is therefore not surprising that they fail in this business. People who are eventually successful in the MLM business are those who have pre-defined long term as well as short term goals. They also visualize the potential obstacles and therefore, do not give up easily.
  2. They do not work efficiently: New MLM business owners do not have a strategy in place to help them sustain and grow their business. They have no idea how to bring more people in their MLM business and keep them in business. They usually try too many strategies without giving adequate time to any of them to succeed. When nothing seems to work, they simply put all the blame on the MLM company for their failure. On the other hand, a few who manage to grow their MLM business spend their initial time learning the winning strategies from other successful MLM business owners.
  3. They do not market their business: Most MLM business owners hope that just because they have started a business and made a few phone calls, the business will come pouring in. Another mistake they make is that they tend to believe that they will get a lot of business from friends and family and they ignore marketing their MLM business to general public. On the other hand, successful MLM business owners use all marketing methods including cold calling, conducting seminars, online marketing, and outdoor marketing to get business. Also, based on their initial results, they keep fine-tuning their marketing strategies.
  4. They are self-centered: Most of the people who join an MLM company to start their business are only focused on themselves. They are only concerned about their success and their business revenue. However, success in a MLM business is totally dependent on networking and building relationships. If you are not eager to help others grow, there are very little chances that you will make it too far in your MLM business.
  5. They do not manage their time: A lot of people who start an MLM business think it as a great opportunity to work from home and make money. However, soon they get involved in their personal tasks and do not dedicate an adequate number of hours each day to their MLM business. On the other hand, successful MLM business owners manage their time effectively and spend fixed number of hours on their business.

Re: What exactly do you need to start a business Re: What exactly do you need to start a business - Starting a business takes many things. Like guts and brains. But what I find pays off the most in online busines is HARD WORK. There is no better alternative. The more energy you use to make your business successful, the better your chances of it being successful
Re: Success? When does an inventor feel successful? Re: Success? When does an inventor feel successful? - I agree with Jude. Success is different to different people, and it is different for one person in is different aspects of life. You can have personal success, business success. For me finishing a very challenging picture puzzle is success. You are only successful if you feel successful.
Re: Success Re: Success - I think success is 2% luck and 98% persistence. While it's true that SOME people are successful due to luck, but the majority of the population has to work very hard to attain their goals. Opening a business require a ton of footwork. This means a lot of travel, a lot of networking, a lot of bank transactions -- just a lot of everything. If you're willing to put up with the monotonous aspects of business and you're willing to push forward, you're more than likely be successful. Also, make sure to cater to your audience/customer.
So much for a family life So much for a family life - I can't imagine these CEOs get much quality family time. It's funny, although these are all CEOs of successful companies - how successful are they themselves? I guess if you define success as being the CEO then it's fine, but for me success shouldn't come at the cost of spending time with your family and friends.
Generalist vs. Expert Generalist vs. Expert - Hi Kevin - great topic! I think to start a business you need to have enough of the general skills to get going. You end up having to do so many things that you need to wear many hats in your business. Even if you have partners there will always be more tasks to get done than time and people available. That being said, you need to have a vision, lead your company forward and be an expert in your field. If you're not one of the best at what you do then it will be hard to stand out and build a successful company. I think the most successful entrepreneurs are experts in a particular field but also have enough skills to be generalists when need be.
