Don’t Just Depend on the Internet for Your Social Networking
The fact is that all our digital connections are simply not the same as having real life connections, acquaintances and friends. Savvy Internet marketers and businesspeople know that real life connections are much more valuable than virtual ones. This type of social networking is being forgotten more and more each year. Someone who actually knows you and can put your face with your name is worth a lot more than a virtual connection.
Depending exclusively on the Internet for our social networking is a bit crazy. After all, there was a time before the Internet where people actually left there house and made real face to face connections with other people. Yes, I know that these days, networking in person sounds so passé.
Now this is not to state that I am stating that virtual connections are not worthwhile. This, in fact, is quite the contrary. If you have read my other articles you know how much I love all the social networking tools that the web has provided us.
Sites like LinkedIn are fantastic for business purposes, and you can make some incredible business contacts. Yet, there is just no denying that making real world contacts can be just as good if not better.
Even in today's digital world, a great many people ultimately find their job through an acquaintance or friend. Having someone that will vouch for you is worth its weight in gold.
Likewise, this rule definitely translates over to the business world as well. Look at it from this perspective- if you were trying to decide between hiring two contractors which would you prefer the one who is your friend and has known for years or a total stranger? Social networks, real life ones, are very important. Therefore, you should try and expand yours.
Expanding your social networking abilities may be as simple as going to more parties. If you have friends that are constantly throwing parties, then consider going more often. While you are there, work the room! Don't just stand back and look lonely, but actually make an effort to get to know people. If you are shy, you will find that you get better at social networking over time.
Make sure you investigate what other options are available for you. Look for groups in your local area that might sync up with your business goals.
Of course, you should always look into what groups your college or university might have in your area. Alumni groups are great ways to make connections and even catch up with old friends.
Try and remember to be helpful to your new acquaintances and friends. If you see a way to help, them try and do so. Perhaps you will see an opportunity to help make a business deal happen by introducing people. This kind of gesture usually garners a great deal of good will, even if nothing comes from the introduction.
The bottom line is to get out there and get connected. Your goal is to build your business. Sometimes that is easier with the more people you know. Besides some of your new friends might even have some worthwhile advice.
