If you are not familiar with Alexa, you should be. This popular website ranking tool is owned by Amazon and carries a lot of clout. Alexa works by having individuals install the Alexa tool onto their computer. Once this toolbar is installed, users are tracked and their habits are used to create website rankings.

A natural question is why would someone install the Alexa toolbar? In exchange for coughing up all of that information, users gain instant access to the Alexa ranking of any website they are visiting. The way this works is that the Alexa toolbar will note the ranking of all webpages that a user visits.

You may have already discerned that Alexa could be a useful tool for any Internet marketer or Internet entrepreneur. The bottom line is that Alexa will give you a rough idea of how much traffic is flowing into your site, but you must remember that it truly is just a rough idea.

Alexa works much like the Nielsen rating systems for television. Thus, it is very far from perfect. Clearly, not every Internet user has the Alexa toolbar on his or her computer, just as only a few homes have Nielsen monitoring boxes.

Alexa bases their ranking off how much time a visitor spends on a site, how many pages they visit, and so forth. While the painted picture of your traffic might not be perfect and the system as a whole is most definitely limited and flawed, Alexa can still be a valuable tool for Internet marketers to use to measure their overall traffic.

Just don't depend on it too much! It wouldn't be prudent to use your Alexa ranking as your only measure of success. If by some fluke you are making money and have a relatively low Alexa ranking, then you should obviously be more interested in your overall earnings.

I like Alexa because it's another example of a free site that can be used to help Internet marketers. A few years ago, in 2007, I lost the successful mortgage brokering business I had created from the ground up. I was forced to set off in a new path, and I was lucky enough to find Internet marketing.

Now I am financially independent once more and I have learned a lot. I used my background as a yoga instructor and avid mediator to help me chart my course and think calmly about my problems. One of the observations that I made was to use as many of the free tools that you have at your disposal. Do that and you will increase your chances of success!

Re: What is a respectible Alexa rank for a small business? - Hi Evan, Just like GT, I am aiming to get my IM business website below 500,000 from a current rank of 687,071. However, I am sure a small business site in a good niche can do well with a much lower rank (higher number). My Japanese-Games-Shop.com site is a very UNprofessional looking website with an Alexa ranking of 4,000,000+ and no marketing budget. The only promotional stuff I have done for it in the last couple of years is an occasional blog post and about three articles on ezinearticles and similar directories. Yet that site brings in a nice regular supplementary income. I am sure that if I wanted to double my sales or go full time with the business I could do so with some effort, a bit more publicity and an Alexa ranking of well over 2,000,000. If you are appealing to a small niche then Alexa ranking is less important. Internet marketing is a much larger niche and I think a high rank, ultimately getting into the top 100,000, should be the aim because with fierce competition you need to be visible and have something to show that you are serious and capable. Someone selling Internet marketing products and services ought to be able to demonstrate that they can market their own website, and a good Alexa ranking is a quick way of doing that. David H

Re: What is a respectible Alexa rank for a small business? - There are methods which will allow you to easily bring an Alexa ranking in the millions down to the 100,000 level. However, bringing it past the 10,000 or 1,000 mark is a considerably more difficult process, because of the stiff competition among websites. Some have adamantly stated that there are no proven ways to game Alexa, while others have claimed that auto-surfs and scripts do work to some degree. From my viewpoint, it's quite hard to maintain the Alexa ranking by cheating Alexa using auto-surf software. Alexa has its own method to find this fraud traffic out and clean your Alexa data.
