Failing At Network Marketing? Fire Yourself
I was in despair much of my early life as a network marketer. I
distinctly remember the first MLM presentation meeting I ever attended.
My excitement was so palpable that I could almost taste the prospect of
gaining wealth and having passive income. I was determined to be my own
boss and nothing was going to get in my way!
That was until, of course, my first disappointment sent me reeling.
The glamour of the professional overheads at that MLM presentation
displaying matter-of-fact charts and graphs of exactly how wealthy I
was going to be in exactly 6 months quickly faded when I hit the
pavement trying to work the business.
Haven’t we all experienced this? When your head comes out of the
clouds and you are faced with the sheer numbers of downline members
required to make a decent months income with your MLM opportunity, it’s
all too easy to lose your gumption. The huge volume of downline and
matrix members need to be “successful” is why I quickly ran screaming
from MLM and converted to the direct sales model of network marketing,
but that is another story for another time.
I eventually had to fire myself (being my own boss and all) and then
rehire myself with an overhauled attitude. Here are the three key
strategies my new career as a successful entrepreneur was founded upon:
- Leadership Mindset
You have probably heard of the importance of proper mindset over and over again, but I can’t stress this enough. Why? Ask yourself: Why is it that some people go on to be leaders in the industry and others so easily fade away, consigning themselves once again to the drudgery of their day job? Do they have fewer challenges? no. Is it the company they are with? Not necessarily. The company you are with and its compensation plan are simply a tool. Some tools are better than others. As marketing legend Mike Dillard points out, no one cares what drill (the product) you are selling to make a hole (more money, time freedom, etc.). Instead, people are looking for leaders who are experts at drilling holes. That is, your mindset should become that of a leader, a trustworthy authority. People will automatically flock to you when they see that you have this leadership mindset. That is when they will buy whatever product you are selling, for whatever price.
The bottom line is that people fail because they simply haven’t yet developed the mental fortitude to overcome any and all challenges that come their way.
Here are the qualities of the Leadership Mindset (a.k.a Entrepreneurial Mindset) that you must be determined to develop: drive; motivation; focus; fortitude; discipline; work ethic; ability to take action; set goals (short-term & long term) and meet them; and the ability to make quick decisions as an entrepreneur. These are the common denominators for your success. Write these phrases down so that you can view them every day and meditate on them. When it comes to many of these qualities, you are probably going to have to fake it until you make it. All leaders have had to do this.
Without the proper mindset, the other two factors below won’t matter. You might as well throw in the towel now. Without a Leadership Mindset, you won’t carry out with the proper actions or properly utilize the tools that necessitate success.
- Massive Action / Consistent Action
It is vital for you as a Leader that you are consistent with your
marketing. Without marketing, you won’t get traffic. No traffic, no
leads and eventual sales. Everyone experiences disappointment with
their advertisements and marketing campaigns. Learn from this, tweak
your ads, and keep advertising. Just because your ezine ad isn’t
pulling in visitors to your website, it doesn’t mean that ezine
advertising doesn’t work. It just means that you need to work on your
ad or tweak your landing page. This is where training and learning from
top Leaders is vital (see #3 below). Focus on one marketing method
until you master it (i.e, Article writing, ezines, PPC (remember to
avoid the Google Slap!), Social Media, etc.). Focus and do not
quit!
When it comes to consistent action, you’re team (your downline) will only do what you do. If you want massive residual income from your downline, there is nothing more important that showing yourself to be a leader. Do you listen to all the training calls your company provides? If you don’t, I can assure you that your team won’t. Do you attend the company conventions? This is a no-brainer. Here’s a hint: Leaders are consistent and self-disciplined even when no one is looking (this is called Integrity).
- The Tool (your company)
Included in this
category would be the level of support from your sponsor or your
company. It is critical that you are continually plugged into some kind
of marketing training and leadership training either from your company
or your sponsor. Sometimes people subconsciously pick out bad sponsors
and companies just like they pick bad relationship partners. I often
get asked, “Once I sign up with you, are you going to just take my
money and then I never hear from you again?” It is sad that people have
to ask this, but it is a real and fair question. If this has happened
to you, then you need to find other leadership in this industry who you
can trust. While your sponsor and company are not an excuse for the
lack of success, it is a huge bonus to have a supportive mentor.
Leaders look at the big picture and they certainly don’t quit just because they don’t have immediate results. They treat their business like a brick and mortar business. If you have to, fire yourself and then rehire yourself along with your new Leadership Mindset!
