Google Slapped or Slapped by the Hand of God-Which is the Most Effective?

Written by: SarahBeth White

Article Overview: Since I keep hearing the term, I found a definition for “Google slapped”: It is a term used by mainly small businesses that rely on Google AdWords to drive business to their sites. Google AdWords allows people to have their advertisements for their business on pages with keywords that relate to their products. People who hold AdWords accounts pay each time someone clicks on their ad at about 5˘-10˘ per click. If Google decides that the page potential customers visit when they click on the ad is unrelated, of poor quality, or maybe it loads slowly, they may take punitive action in the form of a Google Slap which drives up the price of the pay per click amount, sometimes to $10 per click, which most small vendors cannot afford to pay. Google may also reduce your page ranking which means you have to pay more.

Google Slapped or Slapped by the Hand of God-Which is the Most Effective?

Recently, after getting laid off, I once again began a search I have performed many times before. The search for the elusive successful home based Internet marketing business. Since the last time I checked into home based businesses, there have been huge changes in this arena but there are still scams, pyramids, and the selling of pills and potions. The ripoff scams will always be there since they successfully suck people in on a continual basis. I was literally signing up for one of the pills and potions businesses when I saw an advertisement that saved me from making a huge mistake. After reading the ad and accepting the offer, this successful home based Internet marketing business brought me into intensive training. Whether I sink or swim, I will have received an enormous education in Internet marketing. Laid off my traditional job, I listen for all the training I can get from the company and from my research. The term "Google slap" keeps popping up.

Upon looking into it, I found out the following about being "Google slapped": It is a term used by mainly small businesses that rely on Google AdWords to drive business to their sites. Google AdWords allows people to have their advertisements for their business on pages with keywords that relate to their products. Normally people who hold AdWords accounts pay each time someone clicks on their ad at about 5¢-10¢ per click. If Google decides that the page potential customers visit when they click on the ad is unrelated, of poor quality, or maybe just loads slowly, they may take punitive action in the form of a "Google Slap" which drives up the price of the pay per click (PPC) amount, sometimes to $10 per click, which most small vendors cannot afford to pay. Google may also reduce your page ranking, which automatically means you have to pay more to have your ads featured through AdWords.

Having been laid off, time is almost the only thing I have to invest in a home based business. With very little money for advertising, my search involves learning about "free" ways to promote a business by utilizing Facebook, Twitter, My Space and blogs. PPC advertising on Google is not in my ad repertoire at this time so being Google slapped is not one of my worries either. As business grows, I would still rather be the master marketer using creative and savvy methods as opposed to PPC. This community of entrepreneurs helps in every way it can but it does not hand out welfare checks. Hard work is one of the most important components in this business. People with large advertising budgets have alternative ways, such as PPC on Google, to grow their business.

Most importantly to me in this and any endeavor I undertake is my faith in God. The only "slapping" that would concern me would be from my Creator, the CEO of my business, also known as Jehovah Jireh, My Provider. I am not using God to build a business but acknowledging that God controls everything. He knows what is best for me. He does not need Google or any other man-made contrivance. He deserves respect and honor. I attempt to do so in whatever endeavor I am involved. I have heard said many times and try to always say myself that "My life is not my own but His."

Finally I am happier and more fulfilled knowing that being Google Slapped will not likely threaten me anytime soon and my God has NEVER slapped me. Life is simpler and more enjoyable spending time with my son; spending time hiking with my dog, Mo; and spending time with good friends and family. Time = Freedom. For me, I will stay hard at work until I reach a point that leaves me questioning whether I want to use PPC or not and risk being Google Slapped.

Considered to be highly educated. Enjoy traveling in the U.S. learning about our different cultures. Staunch Republican and Southern Baptist which is considered by some to be a lethal combination. Belonging to the ranks of those laid off, I am rebuilding my life so my writing will soon reflect as much. Burning desire in my soul to write but for two years now the only writing I have done is resumes and cover letters but enough of that. I did attempt to make it in a couple of internet marketing businesses but just as in brick and mortar businesses you need capital to make it. Although suggestions of 'how to make it advertising with no monies' were made--it just did not happen for me and I only lost money after long attempts at succeeding. I am incorporated now as Cattle on 1000 Hills, LLC dabbling in real estate but that is all--dabbling.http://cattleon1000hills.blogspot.com, Facebook, and http://twitter.com/SarahBethWhite have lain dormant too long like cocoons waiting for the butterfly to come forth. And they are about to bust loose! My friends think I am crazy or brave or both but I have decided to leave the comforts of my 'home' and move to the mountains where I always planned on 'retiring'. I can enjoy hiking with my dog, Mo, sitting in front of my potbellied stove reading and writing, and sitting outside writing with the music of nature in my ears instead of all the sounds of the city which now annoy me. Mo, a Newffie, looks like a bear and we hope to see a black bear but not up close and personal. Mo is about the size of a smaller black bear so he will have to wear the hunting vests I custom made for him when we hike so no one mistakes him for a bear. I am so excited about our new life and long to begin writing from all that has been saved up during this dormancy.

How Do You Check Google Ranking? How Do You Check Google Ranking? - Now that Google is so responsive to your own search history, how can you get a good idea of what your Google ranking really is for your web pages? Whenever I check my ranking for specific keywords on Google, my web pages appear on the front page, or suspiciously high. My way around this is to check Google ranking via other computer Internet links, i.e., whenever I'm working in a library I will use a library computer to check. I check Google ranking before logging into my Gmail or other Google-related accounts. Does anybody else have any other tips for discovering your Google ranking? Nowadays, I check Bing.com for my webpage ranking as it gives a much less favourable (and so, I guess, "truer") ranking for my webpages than Google does...

I like the point that you brought out with "testing." Google has some amazing tools that can help website owners track everything. From Google Adsense reporting to Google Analytic to Google Conversion and most recently Google Goal Tracking. Between all of those tools a website owner should know exactly what type of traffic is converting & making them money and what type of traffic is not. I even use Google PPC to estimate organic search engine traffic! Website owners would do well to follow your lead and create a base, and then test off that base in regards to advertising. Jeff
Re: Money Does Not Guarantee Happiness Re: Money Does Not Guarantee Happiness - Thanks for singling this point out, Chris. One book that comes to mind that covers it in an overall approach is "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" by Stephen Covey. He addresses our inner life and the way it can change our effectiveness home and at work. There are corporations who have taken this model and effectively molded their business around it.
