How is a Home Based Internet Marketing Business Similar to Gambling?

Guest post by: SarahBeth White

Article Overview: Gambling on cards or gambling on starting up a business both hold that aura of mystique. You have to be willing to take chances in building an online Internet marketing business. There will be times of doubt and weariness that this business may never work for you. Shake those off because this business is the real thing to put your money on. Because I was married to a riverboat gambler, I watched too many people get hurt and some wiped out in the gambling industry. As opposed to that, I see hope and success provided by building a business in the world of e-commerce.

How is a Home Based Internet Marketing Business Similar to Gambling?

Married to a Mississippi River tugboat captain for over 20 years, I am an authority on gambling and would compare gambling to starting your own Internet marketing business. Casinos were illegal back room activities back then. Gambling was an activity on board while waiting for "jobs" to tow those mighty ships in or out of the Mississippi. Gambling on board was not for matches, or for plastic chips. It was for hard money and if you gambled with the captain, you would pay up. Poker was the game of choice on his tug, the Sally R, and he was good at it.

In ways, starting an Internet marketing business or any other business is a gamble. Are you going to make any money? How do I deal with my losses? How do I drive more business my way? Am I doing something wrong? I am growing tired of hearing about all the 40, 50, 60 K earnings. I want to earn that much! I put a bit of money on the table with my chosen system and I continue to hear about people raking in money. Compared to others, I have not risked much money because I have not got much to risk. I got laid off recently and only have time to invest. The question is: Continue to put time into a business that is not paying off yet but that I believe in 100% or continue looking for a "traditional" job?

Although my river boat captain was a compulsive gambler, it took me awhile to understand this obsession. I had never gambled because I was taught gambling was a sin. He took a class on counting cards and with his genius IQ became proficient overnight, joined a team and moved us (me and our 6 week old baby boy) to Lake Tahoe, Las Vegas, Reno and Atlantic City. E-commerce is like casinos in that it never closes. With a computer or laptop, your business can go where you go to be worked where you are at any time. I choose to persist and be consistent in my home based business but there are occasional doubts that try to creep in saying I "gambled" on the wrong business or the wrong home based business altogether. I just go listen to another Wake Up call or archived teaching and the reassurance returns. Or I talk to my mentor or someone in Support and they give just that: Support.

Since I got laid off, I have "gambled" on e-commerce to make a living more than going back to corporate America. E-commerce is the way to go now and I want to go with it. A traditional job holds very little promise for me, no chance for advancement, no way to prepare for retirement and it holds the possibility of another layoff. Despite the occasional doubts, I know the online business I chose is no gamble. The gambling I witnessed, the pain it caused (gambling IS NOT a victim less past time), and the hold it had over my Riverboat Captain's psyche were very real evils. Internet marketing builds your present and will continue to build your future. The choices of advertising or how you choose to work your business are limitless and might be compared to gambling as you try different ways to market it until you find what is going to pay off for you. My mentors with those large incomes want to see the same income for me unlike Vegas Pitt bosses watching to make sure you lose.

Returning to Vegas on November 19 proved to be too much for me. My company was meeting at the Paris and it was imperative that I attend. But I did not plan to get a room while there as I wanted to get in and out as quickly as possible. I was going to play the penny slots until meeting time but slot machines are different now. I was too embarrassed to go to the cashier with my $5 rolls of pennies or ask anyone to show me how to work the slots. I am glad it turned out that way. I got a room and barely made it inside the door before I starting crying. Why had I returned to Vegas? Was this business going to pay off? How sickening it was to look out the window and see casinos that in the past had "comped" us suites and anything else high rollers want. Those curtains were closed quickly to hide the past and allow myself to face my future. I kept crying until I fell asleep for a few hours away from all the hullabaloo.

In addition, you cannot argue that gambling builds a future for families. On the other hand, an online business does build hope for an income and a future. The lottery mentality will not get you anywhere in this Internet business. You have to work hard to earn the 5 and 6 figure incomes we hear about. Instead of gambling your hard earned money away, consider for a moment investing in Internet marketing. Vegas gives you a brief high but that dissipates once on the plane for home and you wonder at what you lost and what you did in Vegas. Trust me. It does not stay in Vegas. As opposed to the OMG that hits you on the plane, a home based business will not be something you regret.

Furthermore, even though an internet business is hard work, the system is already in place with support and getting you setup as quickly as possible to work your business at whatever level you so choose. All you have to do is follow the leader step by step and you will have a sure thing. This is a community of entrepreneurs which wants to see you succeed.

Finally my life is so much happier and more fulfilled as it now provides time to spend with my son; time to go hiking with my dog, Mo; time with family and close friends. Time = Freedom.

Considered to be highly educated. Enjoy traveling in the U.S. learning about our different cultures. Staunch Republican and Southern Baptist which is considered by some to be a lethal combination. Belonging to the ranks of those laid off, I am rebuilding my life so my writing will soon reflect as much. Burning desire in my soul to write but for two years now the only writing I have done is resumes and cover letters. Cattle on 1000 Hills as my blopspot name http://cattleon1000hills.blogspot.com, Facebook, have lain dormant too long. They are about to bust loose! My friends think I am crazy or brave or both but I have decided to leave the comforts of my 'home' and move to the mountains where I always planned on 'retiring'. I can enjoy hiking with my dog, Mo, sitting in front of my potbellied stove reading and writing, and sitting outside writing with the music of nature in my ears instead of all the sounds of the city which now annoy me. Mo, a Newffie, looks like a bear and we hope to see a black bear but not up close and personal. Mo is about the size of a smaller black bear so he will have to wear the hunting vests I custom made for him when we hike so no one mistakes him for one. I am so excited about our new life and long to begin writing from all that has been saved up during this dormancy.

Re: Who inspired you to start? Re: Who inspired you to start? - Hi Evan, I was inspired by Mr. Bill Gates ever since I was a student learning Computers. But I was motivated for Internet as my Business, when I read his book "The Road Ahead" in 1995. It was in this book that Gates laid out his vision of an interconnected world built around the Internet. Based on the premise that life will be transformed by the convergence of inexpensive computing and inexpensive communications, Gates drew from his experience at the center of the personal computer revolution to give insights on the growth, evolution and impact of technology. I had always looked up to Bill Gates as my idol. When I read this book, it made me more focussed on Microsoft and Internet, The Internet was one of the upcoming things in this time. So I took over to the Internet as my primary business. Regards,

Re: How many mambers of this forum are also member of WF? Re: How many mambers of this forum are also member of WF? - Hi Kevin, I have to agree with Tanny. All forums are unique in their own way, but doesn't mean that one is better than the other. What you might get out of one forum, you may not get from another. For instance, the WF focuses on Internet Marketing, while this forum focuses on Entrepreneurship. Each has their own set of benefits. I don't think you can really compare one to the other, unless of course they focused on the same topic. I have learned a lot from this forum, stuff I would never have gotten from the WF. With that being said, I've learned a lot from the WF, specifically since I need to know about Internet Marketing and running an online business. The addition of the Online Business forum here will help, and Jeff is doing a great job as moderator.

Re: Kevin's Case Study #11 - A New Forum Category? Re: Kevin's Case Study #11 - A New Forum Category? - Hi Kevin, Like GT suggested, I also think you can add Internet Marketing as a sub category in the Marketing section and also a Social marketing as subcategory. Online marketing/internet marketing/online promotion are the same, and it will be best to use the common term - Internet marketing. I can't think about someone to moderate a Social Marketing category. We all use it, we all know how to make it work and we all have our own different experience with it.
