Insights from a Former Homeschooling Mom - Part One of Four Part Series

Guest post by: SarahBeth White

Article Overview: Homeschooling can be a rewarding experience for both parent and child. But much has to be taken into consideration before jumping in. Reality check needs to be done as this is very hard work which requires consistency and being persistent. Children learn in different ways so you will have to determine how best to teach. Museums, concerts, music lessons, and so many other outlets allow you to expand your school day as you will finish long before a traditional school day lasts. One on one or two or three is excellent ratio for learning. See Four Part Series on Homeschooling experiences.

Insights from a Former Homeschooling Mom - Part One of Four Part Series

This initial information will probably be discounted as a mother's opinion of her child and the exaggerated way in which some moms discuss their child's abilities. We had moved to the Seattle area where my son celebrated his second birthday. Our circle of friends were all homeschooling families. I learned from listening to these families talk about their home school experiences. They also supplied me with a library of books associated with child development and choosing to take on the responsibility of your child's education. Some of these families had several children they home schooled. I am not so sure I would have tackled it with more than one child. Plus my one child was already way beyond his 2 years in intelligence especially in math. For example: associating stop signs as octagons although he could not say octagons properly. Before our son was school age, we moved around a lot sometimes driving completely across country from our home in Washington to see family in Alabama. This child was rarely bothered by the long road trips as long as he had plenty of books to read, snacks, pieces of heavy equipment to identify but could not pronounce clearly yet, local flora and fauna to experience and especially number games to play.

Finally settled down by the time our son was five years old, he could be enrolled in first grade in a Christian school. The school year was a few months away from completion. I was asked if he could write his name and read because he had to be able to do so before being placed in first grade. Otherwise, he would be "held back" in kindergarten. First of all, I thought school was where he would learn to read and write. Secondly, my reading on male child development proved that boys learn differently from girls. Boys do not learn to read as quickly as girls. Boys have difficulty writing and drawing smaller objects than girls do. And above all else, boys should not be pressured to speed up their learning to fit into school year schedules.

Despite all that, I spent the summer teaching him to write his name and to read a little book about Rocky Raccoon. It hurt to see him struggle in areas that I knew would come to him soon enough. Sometimes, it would come to tears which broke my heart but by the time school started he could write his name and read. Still to this day, I think his handwriting is not that attractive because he was forced to hold that pencil earlier than he should have.

Even though school was going well and my son had asked to be baptized in the church that sponsored the school, his father's behavior once again caused us to pull up stakes and hurry out of town with no landing site in mind. It was about one month before the school year was over so my heart was broken and our son cried because he could not stay and finish the school year. Once we settled down again, I vowed my son would never be yanked in and out of school again. I had been teaching him all his life anyway so why not make the leap to being his "school teacher" as well?

Homeschooling is an excellent choice for families that do move around a lot such as in the military or jobs that cause a parent to travel a lot. The class room can be anywhere and anytime but it really is better to have a solid foundation that does not have to pick up and leave at a moment's notice. Even so, it is far more advisable and less difficult for the child(ren) to home school while traveling instead of being pulled in and out of classrooms, losing friends and having to make new friends continually.

My life is more enjoyable because of my son, my dog, Mo, friends and family and this gift from God called Cattle on 1000 Hills. No cattle or land for sale. Just a fantastic opportunity for your consideration. You will not see me on this site as I have enlisted the help of a friend to tell you his amazing story which is not unique to this business. Happy Hunting!

Feel free to contact me with questions and/or comments on homeschooling. Would love to hear your experiences as a homeschooler.

Considered to be highly educated. Enjoy traveling in the U.S. learning about our different cultures. Staunch Republican and Southern Baptist which is considered by some to be a lethal combination. Belonging to the ranks of those laid off, I am rebuilding my life so my writing will soon reflect as much. Burning desire in my soul to write but for two years now the only writing I have done is resumes and cover letters. Cattle on 1000 Hills as my blopspot name http://cattleon1000hills.blogspot.com, Facebook, have lain dormant too long. They are about to bust loose! My friends think I am crazy or brave or both but I have decided to leave the comforts of my 'home' and move to the mountains where I always planned on 'retiring'. I can enjoy hiking with my dog, Mo, sitting in front of my potbellied stove reading and writing, and sitting outside writing with the music of nature in my ears instead of all the sounds of the city which now annoy me. Mo, a Newffie, looks like a bear and we hope to see a black bear but not up close and personal. Mo is about the size of a smaller black bear so he will have to wear the hunting vests I custom made for him when we hike so no one mistakes him for one. I am so excited about our new life and long to begin writing from all that has been saved up during this dormancy.

Re: Getting ready to sell by childhood baseball card collection. Re: Getting ready to sell by childhood baseball card collection. - Part of my holding on to them came from me not knowing how to sell them effectively. If I took them to a card store I'd get pennies on the dollar. If I sold them online I'd get closer to market value but it would be way too time consuming. I then recently discovered that a family member of a friend of mine sold collector cards on eBay as a side business so I asked if she would sell mine and take a commission on the sale. She agreed so I have until Thursday to get it all organized!
Money I made while in School Money I made while in School - While in university I did have a Student Loan (still paying that bugger off) and had a part-time job as a Call Center agent (inbound). *Canada* I also designed websites (outsourced all the work). I just worked on getting new customers, managed the projects to completion and helped create Marketing Plans for my clients (Online and Offline). *Canada* When I was studying the in the States I also made some money as a Part-time Flight instructor. *USA*
