Serious No No's for Homeschooling Parents - Part Four of Four Part Series

Guest post by: SarahBeth White

Article Overview: Homeschooling can be a rewarding experience for both parent and child. But much has to be taken into consideration before jumping in. Reality check needs to be done as this is very hard work which requires consistency and being persistent. Children learn in different ways so you will have to determine how best to teach. Museums, concerts, music lessons, and so many other outlets allow you to expand your school day as you will finish long before a traditional school day lasts. One on one or two or three is excellent ratio for learning. See Four Part Series.

Serious No No's for Homeschooling Parents - Part Four of Four Part Series

To avoid a lot of headaches, I have listed things you should not do as a homeschooling family if you want to avoid difficulties with local child services, the school system, your neighbors, your extended family and many different institutions affected by your decision to home school your child(ren). Look into all local and state laws and ordinances regarding schooling your child at home. Keep it low key as much as possible and ask around with any homeschooling groups in the area. I called a pastor involved with a private school but homeschooling his three children also. He explained how it worked locally. But he also explained he was adhering to these requirements because he was so visible as a pastor. He encouraged me to continue with the home school plans we had been following, stay low key and we should have no problems.

Because we wanted to be as invisible as possible, we chose to avoid associating with any home school groups. They were usually very vocal especially if the state's ordinances conflicted with their desire to home school. You want to avoid getting your name on any "lists" that may draw attention to the fact that your child is not enrolled in traditional school.

Do not let your child run around outside unsupervised during regular school hours even if lessons have been completed for the day. You will have the neighbors calling child services if your children are outside playing between 8:00 and 3:00 even if that is P.E. for the day.

It may be hard to fill up a traditional school day's hours since homeschooling one on one or two or three is much easier and less time consuming than a teacher with 30+ students to attend to every day. I like to use the restroom example of how much time is lost during a public or private school day with trips to the bathroom when 30+ kids are lined up, sometimes unruly, awaiting their turn to use the

restroom. Compare that to a home school setting with bathroom privileges involving very little time away from lessons.

Try to adhere to what a public or private school day's activities would be like including bathroom breaks, lunch breaks, rest time and other considerations involving 30+ kids instead of your small class size which cannot be topped anywhere. One on one in learning anything is remarkable and produces quick and powerful results.

In addition to knowing that my son is a fine man now, the time spent with him during those homeschooling days will continue to be treasured forever. I know the correct route was taken in his life and am grateful for having the privilege of teaching such a keen, inquisitive mind. Once placed in a private school setting, my son proceeded to earn honors and recognition as well as earning college scholarships.

My life is more enjoyable because of my son, my dog, Mo, friends and family and this gift from God Cattle on 1000 Hills. No cattle or land for sale. Just a fantastic opportunity for your consideration. You will not see me on the biosite as I have enlisted the help of a friend to tell you his amazing story which is not unique to this business. Happy Hunting!

Feel free to contact me with questions about homeschooling or to share your experiences in homeschooling. I would love to start a dialogue on the experience of homeschooling one's child.

Considered to be highly educated. Enjoy traveling in the U.S. learning about our different cultures. Staunch Republican and Southern Baptist which is considered by some to be a lethal combination. Belonging to the ranks of those laid off, I am rebuilding my life so my writing will soon reflect as much. Burning desire in my soul to write but for two years now the only writing I have done is resumes and cover letters. Cattle on 1000 Hills as my blopspot name http://cattleon1000hills.blogspot.com, Facebook, have lain dormant too long. They are about to bust loose! My friends think I am crazy or brave or both but I have decided to leave the comforts of my 'home' and move to the mountains where I always planned on 'retiring'. I can enjoy hiking with my dog, Mo, sitting in front of my potbellied stove reading and writing, and sitting outside writing with the music of nature in my ears instead of all the sounds of the city which now annoy me. Mo, a Newffie, looks like a bear and we hope to see a black bear but not up close and personal. Mo is about the size of a smaller black bear so he will have to wear the hunting vests I custom made for him when we hike so no one mistakes him for one. I am so excited about our new life and long to begin writing from all that has been saved up during this dormancy.

Re: Getting ready to sell by childhood baseball card collection. Re: Getting ready to sell by childhood baseball card collection. - Part of my holding on to them came from me not knowing how to sell them effectively. If I took them to a card store I'd get pennies on the dollar. If I sold them online I'd get closer to market value but it would be way too time consuming. I then recently discovered that a family member of a friend of mine sold collector cards on eBay as a side business so I asked if she would sell mine and take a commission on the sale. She agreed so I have until Thursday to get it all organized!
Money I made while in School Money I made while in School - While in university I did have a Student Loan (still paying that bugger off) and had a part-time job as a Call Center agent (inbound). *Canada* I also designed websites (outsourced all the work). I just worked on getting new customers, managed the projects to completion and helped create Marketing Plans for my clients (Online and Offline). *Canada* When I was studying the in the States I also made some money as a Part-time Flight instructor. *USA*
