Some Holiday Traditions and a great Christmas Bread to Try Out
|
| Guest post by: SarahBeth White |
Article Overview: Most everyone who celebrates Christmas or other holidays around this time of year have traditions they preserve. If you have small children in the home, it is never too late to start celebrating traditions no matter how big or small they may seem to you. For your children who are already overwhelmed by the hustle and bustle of the season, taking out some quality time as a family to decorate, bake, sing or any other number of things can make the season even more important to your children. My holidays are better because of my son, my dog, Mo, friends, family and this gift from God: Cattle on 1000 Hills. You will not find me on this site as I have enlisted the help of a friend to share his phenomenal story.

Some Holiday Traditions and a great Christmas Bread to Try Out
Most everyone who celebrates Christmas or other holidays around this time of year have traditions they preserve whether they think of it that way or not. If you have small children in the home, it is never too late to start celebrating traditions no matter how big or small they may seem to you. For your children who are already overwhelmed by the hustle and bustle of the season, taking out some quality time as a family to decorate, bake, sing or any other number of things can make the season even more important to your children.
A list of activities that are Christmas traditions for some families:
Pulling out certain old ornaments for the tree. How the tree is decorated can be a touchy tradition for some but hopefully everyone, big and small, will be allowed to join in a little bit.
Does the family purchase a live tree? Do they go to the tree farm together? Then return home for hot chocolate or cider?
Warm apple cider provides refreshment and also fills the house with wonderful smells.
The dinner menu must include certain items. Guests and family want the comfort foods that remind them of their childhood especially special desserts and goodies made only at this time of year.
Eating too much (or pigging out) is a tradition at most holiday meals.
Sport's fans have to sit around and watch their favorite teams win or die an embarrassing death.
We pull out the special holiday sweaters and other attire only worn this time of year.
Special Christmas services are attended especially candlelight services on Christmas Eve and
Christmas concerts at a child's school.
We get together with family members we usually only see once a year.
Hayrides to see Christmas nativity scenes (live or otherwise) are a wonderful tradition to enjoy.
Holiday movies play over and over at this time of year. Everyone has their favorite but there should be no conflict in viewing since they do play the favorites repeatedly.
I have tried to come up with a typical list that I know a lot of people participate in during the holidays. I am not very familiar with what some other religions practice so this was not meant to insult or offend. You can always add your favorites.
One of our most recently added Christmas traditions is baking Stollen, German breakfast bread loaded with fruits and nuts. I first tasted this wonderful treat at someone's home years ago. I have baked most every type of bread there is so I should have no trouble with Stollen, too, so I thought. It is a lot of work and expense to make Stollen. But worth the effort. Once baked the loaves are decorated with glaze/icing, sliced almonds and red and green candied cherries which makes it quite beautiful. You hate to cut into such a beautiful item but it is hard to resist. As the holidays progress, if you have Stollen left, you should toast it and slather on some butter for a wonderfully special breakfast treat. If you have guests in your home during holiday season, put the Stollen out at breakfast time with plenty of butter and some juice so you as host/hostess do not have to do much else in the way of breakfast fare as sleepy heads get up at different times.
Stollen is a yeast bread so if you know anything about baking bread, this means some heavy duty kneading with all the fruits and nuts added to the batter. I do not own a bread machine and do all my bread making the old fashioned way. I have experimented with rapid rise yeast and found it to work okay in Stollen. I will not list a recipe. I found several recipes online to choose from. Over the years, I have played with the recipes tweaking it here and there until I found what I liked best.
So enjoy your holidays no matter what your traditions may be! Especially enjoy the time you have with family.

Belonging to the ranks of those laid off, I am rebuilding my life so my writing will soon reflect as much. Burning desire in my soul to write but for two years now the only writing I have done is resumes and cover letters. Cattle on 1000 Hills as my blopspot name http://cattleon1000hills.blogspot.com, Facebook, have lain dormant too long. They are about to bust loose! My friends think I am crazy or brave or both but I have decided to leave the comforts of my 'home' and move to the mountains where I always planned on 'retiring'. I can enjoy hiking with my dog, Mo, sitting in front of my potbellied stove reading and writing, and sitting outside writing with the music of nature in my ears instead of all the sounds of the city which now annoy me. Mo, a Newffie, looks like a bear and we hope to see a black bear but not up close and personal. Mo is about the size of a smaller black bear so he will have to wear the hunting vests I custom made for him when we hike so no one mistakes him for one. I am so excited about our new life and long to begin writing from all that has been saved up during this dormancy.
