What is the Art to Decision Making?

You can break decision making down into four steps:

1. Define your problem.

2. Discern a variety of solutions, then:

3. Determine the best solution.

4. Develop effective actions for implementing your decision

Find and define your real problem:

Take adequate time for careful thought and deliberation; do not hurry through this step because the reason for the problem must be found. Change needs to be made, so:

What is best when you look at long term goals and visions?

If necessary, can you change the mentality of "But we have always done it that way"?

What impact will your alternative have? Always consider if you are dealing with short term or long term needs. Do you have all the information needed to make the best decision? Make your decision with the facts in hand but be prepared for change later, if any new relevant information surfaces.

Discern a variety of solutions:

Can you come up with a variety of solutions for the problem? Do not include any either-or plans. Test basic beliefs and develop a solution, even if it is not the right one. Taking no action at all is one solution. But before opting for that, make sure the problem is not being avoided because it is unpleasant to deal with.

Determine the best solution:

Which of your solutions offers the best results with the least effort? Even the best choice comes with risks. Have you thought through all the alternatives? Be wary of only one solution as it is unusual to have just one solution. And when attempting to change visions or goals, look at the big picture. Changing habits should be made slowly and steadily.

Develop action steps:

Solutions should take care of underlying causes not just put a band aid on the problem to make decision making less uncomfortable.

Test the human factor if a solution looks good on paper. People are the most important factor. Your solution may be the best but if your people cannot understand it, how will it be carried out? Provide leadership to make the changes. Find the right people to implement the new goals.

Educate and re-train if necessary. Do not take the wrong direction because it is easier.

Do not waste your time selling the decision. Rather determine why there is hesitancy to that decision. Communicate the actions needed and assume leadership if necessary to motivate change. When solutions affect people, those solutions will affect productivity until the team understands that it helps them achieve their own goals and assists them in their work.

My own decision making issue involved starting an internet marketing business while searching for a job in the traditional workforce after I got laid off. My life is happier and more fulfilled since making that decision because I now have time to spend with my son; time to go hiking with my dog, Mo; and time to spend with my close friends and family. Time = Freedom. I am happy with the decision that I made and wish you success in your own decision making experiences.

Considered to be highly educated. Enjoy traveling in the U.S. learning about our different cultures. Staunch Republican and Southern Baptist which is considered by some to be a lethal combination. Belonging to the ranks of those laid off, I am rebuilding my life so my writing will soon reflect as much. Burning desire in my soul to write but for two years now the only writing I have done is resumes and cover letters. Cattle on 1000 Hills as my blopspot name http://cattleon1000hills.blogspot.com, Facebook, have lain dormant too long. They are about to bust loose! My friends think I am crazy or brave or both but I have decided to leave the comforts of my 'home' and move to the mountains where I always planned on 'retiring'. I can enjoy hiking with my dog, Mo, sitting in front of my potbellied stove reading and writing, and sitting outside writing with the music of nature in my ears instead of all the sounds of the city which now annoy me. Mo, a Newffie, looks like a bear and we hope to see a black bear but not up close and personal. Mo is about the size of a smaller black bear so he will have to wear the hunting vests I custom made for him when we hike so no one mistakes him for one. I am so excited about our new life and long to begin writing from all that has been saved up during this dormancy.

Re: Subject line Etiquette Re: Subject line Etiquette - [quote="jvprosperity":b50c4a20]Another email rant: Is there some place on the internet that outlines proper "Subject line" headings? There mus be a system out there that people use to be more efficient email senders. Not everything that comes into my mail box requires my immediate attention. I would love to educate myself and the people who send me emails on proper subject lines. Maybe something like: "Urgent Review: <<Title of document>>" "Decision Required: "<<Subject matter>>" just something for me to quickly scan the subject lines and decide which ones need my immediate attention. Anyone know of such email standards that exist out there?[/quote:b50c4a20] The only messages I get that say Urgent or Decision Required etc are spam. I tell people to put something relevant to their business with me in the subject line - this is especially important for the people who fall into my junk mail. Chris
Re: Quote of the Day - "We are each responsible for our own life Re: Quote of the Day - "We are each responsible for our own life - In one of my articles related to "Is It a Scam or is it YOU" most cry Scam when in fact they have done nothing the with the program, havent followed the bluprint or the training, improperly marketed it. etc. "One mans scam may be another mans bonanza" is a quote used. Summing up the article, Do your Own Due Diligence, Make your own decision, and finally "Take Responsibility for your Decision regardless of the outcome Good or Bad"
