How to Create a Simple and Practical Business Vision Statement
Vision is key to leadership.
In fact, it is impossible to be a leader without having a vision. Leaders influence and gain the commitment of
others through their dynamic vision. That means, as a business person or
manager, you must have a vision for your business or team.
But what does a vision look like?
I have had the opportunity to help many organizations and
teams around the world create vision statements. Here
are the practical steps to creating a dynamic vision.
First, every vision statement should have a statement that
includes the type of culture one wants to create within the business or
team. A vision is useless if the
organizational environment doesn’t support the realization of that vision. One must ask, “What is the ideal state I want
to create with this group of people I lead?”
Second, a vision statement should include the kind of result
one wants to achieve. Many vision
statements express the desire to be #1 in a certain field or region.
With the above information in mind, here is the formula for
creating a practical vision for your organization or team:
Our vision for our____________________team/organization is
to create a_______________________
environment, so that(results)___________________________________________________________
Here’s an example:
Our vision for our bed
and breakfast is to create a supportive, teamwork, competent, hard working,
open, fun, customer-focused environment so that we become the #1 bed and
breakfast of choice within the city of Denver.
In their book, Leadership
Challenge, Kousez and Posner tell us that great companies demonstrate these
three traits:
1) Caring Culture
2) Sense
of Pride and Uniqueness
3) High
Standards of Performance and Behavior
It is extremely important to create a vision that has in
mind the type of culture you want to create.
Always remember, it is within an organizational culture that great
products and services are created. If the
culture is lacking in supportiveness and openness, the members of that
organization will not be committed to providing exceptional products and
services.
A word of warning. DO
NOT impose your vision on others. If you
do, your associates will rebel. They
should be involved in the development and implementation of that vision. That is why you see the word Our and not My at the beginning of the vision statement. As the old saying goes, “A mission imposed is
a mission opposed.” I do realize that
once the vision is created, all new members of the organization must abide by
that vision even if they weren’t involved in its creation. Do allow, however, your associates to
question the vision as they become more competent at their jobs and voice their
suggestions. Vision is always fluid and
not something that is set in stone forever.
Once you have created the vision statement, place it somewhere
so you can see it every day. Once a
week, ask yourself this question: Is my team realizing this vision? If the answer is yes, be proud that your team
is moving the organization or team forward.
If the answer is no, you must reflect on your leadership and ask
yourself: Why are my associates not following me toward the realization of our
vision. Do everything you can to be the
best leader you can be.
Have fun and reach for the stars.
