Home Based Business - Qualifying as a Professional

As a New Home Based Business Owner, you are most likely in a rush to get started monetizing your business to generate a steady cash flow.

Without actually preparing yourself professionally you cannot inspire confidence in your clients, referrals, customers or anyone else. You will need to be professional to develop a strong relationship with all of your business associates.

The first rule of a true professional is to separate your business from your personal life. You will need a separate office space within your home. A well designed home office will promote competence, focus, proficiency in yourself and a quite setting for phone calls while you are working.

Here are few pointers to remember regarding Professionalism: First Impressions:

When working from home, everyday may appear to be a casual day. As a saying goes "First impression is the best impression" and this holds true here as well. If you are meeting out side your office, dress accordingly. If a suit is needed, wear one. If you are meeting casually, then dress casually. When on the telephone, always keep a smile on your face and be excited....it will affect your attitude and transfer thru the phone via your voice and make a much better impression to your client.

Branding Yourself and Your Business:

When you start your business, you will need to get your professional designed business cards, letterhead and other business forms printed that clearly defines who you are and what your business is. This will help to make a positive impact on your clients.

Money Management:

Making and receiving payments is another important aspect of home based business. You will need to make sure that you have your bank account established. You need to decide if you will be accepting cash or credit card payments from your customers? If you are going to accept credit card payments over the Internet, you will also need to register with an online payment processing company in order to make the long distance transactions faster and easier.

A personal credit card for all of your business expenses is also a great way to help you manage your business by keeping track of your expenses with monthly billing reports.

You will need to maintain accurate reports on all of your business transactions. If you are inexperienced in accounting, you will want to hire the services of a good accountant who can give you great advice on how to save money on tax deductions.

If you are qualified and want to handle your own accounting, you can get additional help from software applications available on the Internet.

Keep Abreast of Technology:

Keeping abreast of current technology relative to your business is another crucial part of maintaining the professional status of your business. Technology makes our lives and our businesses a lot easier and more efficient. For example, auto-responder software will enable you to do mass E-Mailing and follow-ups with your clients more efficiently. This can also save you a lot of time and money as opposed to doing phone calls and snail mailings.

Similarly, a well designed professional website will make your marketing and promotion job less tedious. Remember, you are not in business unless your potential customers know that you are. Therefore, advertise, advertise and advertise! Methods to use should include: word of mouth; newspapers; free ads; bill boards; signs; Internet websites; social groups and etc.

You will need to have a dependable computer and backup system in place along with an electrical power surge protection system. And remember to keep you computer backup off site from your office computer incase of some devastating emergency at home.

Find Good Mentors:

You should always seek out a team of professionals to help you maintain your business efficiently (i.e. Accountant; Insurance Agent; Realtor; Attorney; and etc.) You will also want to join social groups to help promote your business.

Staying in contact with your team of professionals will open up more options for growth. Your business will depend upon you making contacts and building your network of clients, friends and business associates. Join online discussion forums to seek help whenever you feel that additional input is required is another great business tip.

Maintaining your professional integrity is critical to your business success. Your professionalism will support your integrity and creditability and will give you an added edge over your competition with your home based business.

Re: Trade Shows - Are They Worth It? Re: Trade Shows - Are They Worth It? - HI, I have used trade shows (not participated) to collect potential clients. For example, the Home & Garden Industry is extremely behind the time in regards to their websites. I attended an Home & Garden Expo in Denver and collected all the companies contact information. I plan on cold calling & mailing information to each business. It also gave me time to research the industry more, talk directly to the owners in many cases, and learn more about what they need.
