How Important Is Encouragement To A Home Business Owner?

Guest post by: David Beairsto

Article Overview: In successful businesses, systems are in place to ensure the morale of the employees is kept at a high level. When the home business owner needs encouragement where do they go? In reality they need encouragement which means they should find it somewhere if it isn't in place, or establish a system themselves. Regular encouragement is necessary for all aspects of life, business especially.

How Important Is Encouragement To A Home Business Owner?

Positive reinforcement directly affects our attitude and motivation. It's said that a person needs to receive six to seven positive statements to simply balance the effect of one negative statement. With a ratio that stacked, the amount of encouragement anyone needs is staggering. To a home business owner it can be critical. Most companies, especially where sales are concerned, have programs in place to address this issue. They actually take the steps necessary to ensure their employees are pumped up and ready to go. If they take the time to screen potential employees for attitude issues, why wouldn't they include measures or protection against negativity?

My own network has in place a variety of measures for ensuring ongoing personal development. Among the many training calls there is one specifically designed to encourage people. Curiously it comes early in the day. When we need to be properly motivated, it should happen before our most productive time of day.

What I've discovered as a home business owner is the reciprocal affect of offering encouragement whenever possible. We know instinctively, that compliments we fish for won't have the same results, as those that come unsolicited. However, the more we encourage others, the more encouragement we can expect in return.

Simply because I don't face rush hour traffic, and have the ability to schedule travel around school bus hours, doesn't mean my day is stress free. Encouragement has a way of lowering our stress, similar to the effects of exercise and fresh air.

We help to make each other healthier and more productive through the loving act of encouragement. We need it for business and we need it for life.

I think one thing we can do to help each other meet our goals is to do what we're already doing - [i:3gqf4vad]Encouragement[/i:3gqf4vad]. Job titles Job titles - [quote:3shpwvxj]In fact, I've had friends tell me that "Founder" is better than "Owner" since it's less possessive.[/quote:3shpwvxj] For myself, I don't care for the term "Founder" [i:3shpwvxj]because [/i:3shpwvxj]it's not possessive. You can be the founder of a company and have sold it - so it no longer belongs to you. However, if you call yourself "Owner" - people know the company is still in your hands. But I don't like Owner, either. I'd prefer President or Director, because one can be an absentee owner, whereas if one is a President or Director, people assume you're involved in the day to day activities. Manager, on the other hand, wouldn't work if its your business, because (to me, anyway) that implies that you "manage" for someone else - like at a restaurant.
Re: What works for you? Re: What works for you? - Hi Yinka, I work better under pressure of deadlines when I am doing something for other people. However, I like to have the leisure to develop my own projects. The first case is what Stephen Covey calls a "Quadrant 1" activity ("Important and urgent") whereas the second case is a "Quadrant 2" activity ("Important, not urgent"). We should aim to make as much time as possible for Q2 activities so that we can develop our own projects. Easier said than done!
Re: How do you budget your life? Re: How do you budget your life? - Here is my financial management categories for today: 15% Long Term Savings; 10% Home Expenses; 45% Business and Marketing charges; 10% Friends (Meeting); 20$ Scientific and Law Books. But this will change when it is August or September. Orxan
